About Timothy B.
I studied piano, composition and music technology at KCKCC, where I played in the jazz band and jazz ensemble, and classical piano honor's recital. I've taught at two local stores and, for the bulk of my career, gave recitals at least once per year. For years, I sent students to MAMA (Mid-America Music Association) and have had an approximate 90% trophy win rate.

I am a laid back, nurturing teacher. I believe that it's far more beneficial to get to know the student and cater to his or her needs and teach at his or her own pace, though I will not tolerate laziness. If my students are performing far beneath their potential, I can get mean in my own way (i.e, I will listen to Take Me Out to the Ball Game for a half hour in order to make sure they get it right). I reward "hard" lessons such as this with fun lessons. I like to involve the entire family (especially regarding practice time). I don't like to give grades so long as my students are doing their best, but will do if required and leave it to you as to how you wish to implement said grades. I also like to know what else is going on in my students' lives so I can assess exactly how important piano is at any given time (if your child has another important project, I will lighten up until it's over).
I begin with my own method which involves keyboard coordination exercises (in the form of familiar tunes) while teaching my own unique brand of word counting along with the white key letter names in relation to the black key groups (it seems out of order, but it does eliminate the "counting up" mental step that tends slow sight reading).
I use Faber & Faber method books and like to get students into more challenging "long term" literature as soon as I feel they are ready.
