Specialties

Vocal Technician. Focus on posture, breath, purity of vowels, song preparation for competition and performance in opera, classical and music theatre. Teach vocal rehabilitation from vocal nodules, granulomas and vocal fold damage. Teach speaking and breathing techniques for speeches, sports announcing and symposiums.

Lesson Details

Students will be guided through a step by step learning process in order to create a firm foundation of musical understanding. Each lesson is created for the individual student needs to progress successfully with singing. Vocal exercises are composed by the teacher for each student. Various exercises will be assigned at every lesson for practice to protect the health and well being of the voice to prevent vocal nodules and other vocal fold injuries. Practice Logs will be issued each week to ... serve as a teaching guide. Exercises are necessary for learning good vocal health, purity of vowels, clarity of tone, text, style, emotion, artistry and correct technique. The application of those exercises will be applied to the repertoire when the student understands the basics of vocal technique. Commitment to daily practice is essential for learning and application of fine musicianship. The student will gain the ability to focus on technique, study habits that apply to all subjects, creativity and self confidence. The first month will be devoted to understanding the "language" of vocal technique. The following 2-3 months will focus on learning the rhythm, the notes, the text and syllables of the chosen songs. The continuing months will complete the full circle of text, notes, rhythm, character and musical phrasing of 1-3 songs prepared securely for performance. Progress of lessons remains strictly upon the commitment made by the student and their willingness to succeed. And yes, it can be accomplished with fun and delight.

Susanne received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Michigan with honors. For 11 years she taught as a Professor of Vocal Music for the College of Fine Arts with Western Michigan University and for 2 years as a Vocal Music Instructor for Northwest Bible University in Kirland, WA . She taught vocal music classes at the University of Washington during her doctoral studies and has over 25 years experience teaching private voice students from the ages of 15 to ... 70. Teaching the finer techniques of singing is her passion. "As a teacher, I thrive on helping students achieve their musical goals. Successful singing energizes students also promotes concentration, work ethic and self confidence in all facets of life for both the student and the teacher."

She served as the Director of Voice for the Music Theatre Performance Program at Western Michigan Michigan University and has been instrumental in teaching Vocal Health to students and professional speakers. Introductory classes in voice and classes for non singers are an integral part of her teaching career. One of her classes for non-singers was featured on KING 5 TV in Seattle and NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw.

Her vocal career began as a classical singer performing lead roles in Die Fledermaus (Rosalinda and Adele), Don Giovanni (Zerlina), The Crucible (Abigail Williams), Carmen (Frasquita) to name a few. She has achieved success as soprano soloist in many oratorios across the United States including a CBS broadcast of Haydn’s Creation. the BBC broadcast presentation of Mrs, H.H.A Beach’s Grand Mass in E flat Major. Other oratorios include: Faure’s Requiem, Beethoven’ Mass in C, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Vaughn William’s Hodie to name a few.

Susanne integrates Vocal Health into all of her work. She has worked in conjunction with Speech Therapists helping patients recover from vocal nodules and vocal problems caused by acid reflux disease.

She continues to work with speaking voices by coaching professional sports announcers, radio commentators, politicians and attorneys with vocal diction, breathing techniques, vocal inflection and speech presentations.
