Originally from Columbia SC, Steve began music lessons at age 8. He continued with them for ten years then enrolled at The University of South Carolina as a music major. Steve studied piano with Dr. John Williams Emeritus Professor of Music, studied music theory and composition with Dr. Peter Gerschefski and was a member of the Choir led by Dr. Arpad Darazs. All of these great musicians and teachers had a major influence on Steve. After college Steve traveled extensively and playing and performing in Las Vegas Style show bands.Steve moved to Charlotte in 1982 married Debra and began a Family, At that time a neighbor asked Steve to teach his son piano. Steve discovered he enjoyed sharing his knowledge and love of music. The rest, as they say, is history. Steve has been a full time private piano teacher for the last seven years. Steve is a member of Charlotte Piano Teachers Forum and conducts recitals and performance opportunities for its members. Steve continues to teach full time and perform with various groups. *** Lesson Details *** For beginners, I use a fairly traditional approach. I start students with the Bastien Books, John Schaum note speller, and a scale book. I emphasize chord recognition as soon as possible and show the student how to build on these patterns. I am very patient and not at all overly demanding. I realize children ( and adults) and very busy with many activities and piano is just one of them. Of course having said that, you will get out of it what you put into it. I am a good teacher, but I can't sprinkle magic dust on you and make you a good musician. My teaching philosophy is totally positive reinforcement. For more advanced students, I recommend certain classical repertory and popular music if they are interested. Let's pull out the I-Pod and play along with Coldplay, McCartney, Beatles, Black eyed Peas, Glee -Whatever interests you! *** Specialties *** in addition to teaching piano lessons I am proficient in synth sounds and running an instrument like the Yamaha Motif, Sequencing, and creating soundbeds.
