I excel at mending breaks, achieving tonal accuracy from 'sloppy' or 'off-pitch' singers, strengthening the voice where it is weak and sweetening it where it is harsh, expanding range toward its physical possibilities, focusing the voice, bringing ease and confidence where there was strain and worry. In short, I teach students how to remove the obstacles that block us from joyfully expressing our hearts in song. Vocal studies include many years with vocal Masters - people who know how to free and enhance each individual voice at a rapid pace - and an M.A. in Voice. (See Musical Training below.) I have taken this training onto the stage and into my own teaching studio and used my experiences of what does and does not work - and what is most effective in the least amount of time - to benefit my students. *** Lesson Details *** Lessons are fun and full of specific information and vocal "ah ha's" to bring rapid improvement. Each lesson is recorded on CD for students to work with at home. We work on songs in the genre(s) of a student's choosing, and exercises specifically selected to build your voice. The exercises I use are culled from Speech Level Singing, Ann Thornton, Edward Sayegh (Garcia Marchesi method), and from my own inventions. The Speech Level Singing exercises are marvelous for helping easy production, chord coordination, and range. I am not a Speech Level Singing instructor, as I do not want to be limited to only this technique. Ann Thornton concepts deliver remarkable clarity, ease, and focus, as well as further refinement of chord coordination. Those exercises that I use from Edward Sayegh increase body engagement and the power of the sound. We work songs from mp3s and/or sheet music. I can transpose and change the speed of recordings to taylor generic karaoke CDs to a student's voice. I expect students to make solid - often very rapid - progress. And all students who practice meet this expectation. *** Specialties *** My specialties are starting voices and fundamentally fixing vocal difficulties. My passion is enabling the technical side of the voice the express what the spirit of the voice wants. Children, teens, adults, no matter what the age, I know how to start you off into or return you to - a world of song. Whatever your age or level, if your voice breaks or is uneven ... or you struggle with limited range... or you are straining... or if you have trouble with pitch accuracy ... or your voice sounds fuzzy or nasal or harsh - I specialize in guiding you to vocal ease. Merrill is excellent! She has done wonders with my voice. She works with you to bring out the best in your voice, and lesson after lesson, she teaches you not only technique, but also ways to really connect with your music and bring it to life. She uses humor--lessons are FUN! Merrill is also very personal; she doesn't have a cookie-cutter approach to teaching. Merrill gets to know you, and makes sure that she is teaching you and working on your voice, and every aspect to make it your best. She listens VERY intently to every note you sing, and helps every aspect of your voice that she can. I consider it a precious gift to have a teacher who won't let you or your voice get away with "mediocre," but patiently takes you to your best. Together you and Merrill set measurable goals, and as a student, I can say that I am defeating "vocal demons" and reaching heights that were only pipe dreams before. Thank you, Merrill, for taking my voice and music to a whole new level--and for making it so much fun in the process.

Is there any way that I could give Merrill 10 stars? If there was, I'd surely do it! I've been working with Merrill for a while, and she has helped me grow from a tentative novice to a full-fledged confident performer. With each lesson, I leave with a better understanding of my voice, and what I need to do to be the best that I can be. Thank you, Merrill!

Merrill is a great coach! She's patient, understanding, and fun! She's extremely good at explaining what I'm doing well, and things I can improve on in a manner that I can understand, and most importantly, she makes me feel very comfortable. If you want a coach who will spend quality time with you improving your technique and overall abilities, Merrill is right for you. I couldn't be happier with my experience, and I highly recommend Merrill's services.) Merrill definitely deserves the full 5, and if there were more, I'd check those too! Couldn't be any happier with the progress I've made since seeing her, and I'm beginning to actually FEEL the difference in the way I sing. I can also hear it :) Correct breathing is becoming like second nature to me, and vowels are something we're working on now. HIGHLY recommend Merrill if you're serious about wanting to be a singer.
