Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Sarah is exactly what I was looking for - cheerful, disciplined and a wonderful teacher ! While I can pay by ear, she had me reading music right from the start, which was my prime objective. She also is providing some basic music theory, and we now have a regular 2-to-3-times-a-month schedule. I'm committing a year to this, and then, with Sarah's help, we'll move on to bluegrass fiddling ! April 14, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Highly recommend, great instructor So glad Sarah was our granddaughters first instructor for her introduction to the violin. She is a very positive and friendly person. She instinctively knew the right approach for Natasha with the right amount of encouragement, patience and firmness. Natasha always looked forward to her lesson and found that in practicing the time went by faster than she thought it would. July 17, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by My Music Theory Teacher My music teacher was well planned. She always summed up what we talked about from our previous lesson before building up on more information. She taught me through my zone of proximal development. I was given the opportunity to practice what was shown from each lesson by doing homework. I found great happiness in studying the construction of music. Her teaching pedagogy was strong! She would incorporate mnemonic devices to help me learn the musical concepts easier. When I did not grasp a certain idea, she was patient with me. At times she would teach me from my own musical knowledge of various instruments. Other times she would share with me her own personal experiences and stories. I am thankful to have met such an amazing music teacher! August 23, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great! Sarah is a great teacher. She knows how to teach according to my strengths and weaknesses. She is very professional and approachable. I always feel comfortable and safe in her studio. I am always amazed by her talents as a musician and a teacher. I highly recommend her. February 22, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sarah is very friendly and put my daughter at ease right away. She is also very patient and knowledgeable - characteristics which are important in a teacher. I highly recommend her! May 17, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Retired Sarah has shown me how to hold the neck correctly, improve my posture while playing and how to use the bow more effectively. I am sixty years old, and have been playing the 'fiddle' for quite sometime, and had only one or two lessons prior to meeting Sarah. I knew many bad habits were acquired without formal instruction, and she has gently shown me how to correct them. Everything she has shown me has been very beneficial, and I have learned more in the short period I've been taking her lessons than I had in the fifteen or so years I clumsily attempted to play the violin. She is very accomplished, and is so very effective with her method of instruction. She certainly is an asset to your program. January 6, 2011

  • Getting Started

Excited about jumping into music lessons? Before you can get to the guitar tabs, violin concertos, and vocal riffs, take a moment to think about the logistics of your lessons.
    Lesson Length
There are a few things to consider when choosing between 30-, 45- or 60-minute lessons. First and foremost, take your age and experience level into account. You'll also want to think about your long- and short-term goals, and the time you'll need to reach them. Most importantly, consider how long you or your child is able to stay focused.
    Lesson Location
Teachers have the option to display availability for in-home, in-studio, and online music lessons. In-home lessons take place at your house, in-studio lessons are conducted at the teacher's home or professional studio, and online lessons are taught over the internet via live video chat.

    Start Your Lessons

Now the excitement can really begin! Consider the following to ensure an exceptional first lesson...
    Prepare for Your First Lesson
Once you've completed the last step, your teacher will call you within the next couple of days to confirm your first lesson time and provide you with directions to their studio, if needed. We also encourage you to discuss your goals and any other questions you may have.
    What To Expect
Every teacher is different, but most first lessons begin with an assessment of where you are in your studies. At a beginner level, you might review the basics of your instrument, such as the different parts, how to hold it correctly, and proper care and maintenance. For voice, this may be the time you learn about breathing and posture.
    Reach the Goals You Set
Every TakeLessons student is unique, and so is your lesson plan! You'll work with your instructor to develop a plan suited to meet your specific goals. Most TakeLessons instructors will also keep track of your progress with a lesson journal.
