    About Rafael P.

    Rafael's love of performing is accompanied with a passion for teaching. He teaches voice privately in addition to teaching at the Butler University Community Arts School. He has taken and received A's in 3 vocal pedagogy courses throughout his undergraduate and graduate studies with professors Dr. Brian Horne who is the current NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), Mary Anne Scott, and Dr. Michael Sells who was a former Dean of the Jordan School of Music at Butler University. Students of Rafael have won awards at ISSMA Solo & Ensemble competition and have also been awarded talent scholarships at the undergraduate collegiate level. He has also substituted as an instructor in one of the Indianapolis Children's Choir's outreach programs. Brazilian bass-baritone Rafael performed his IU Opera Theater debut as Bartolo in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro last fall. He is honored to perform the role of Su Cu in the world premiere of The Tale of Lady Thi Kinh. As a first-year master’s student, Rafael studies with Tim Noble and has previously studied with Thomas Studebaker, François Loup, and Mark Gilgallon in addition to receiving guidance from Mary Anne Spangler Scott. He recently sang the role of Don Basilio in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Norton in Rossini’s La Cambiale di Martimonio, and Bartolo in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro in the Montefeltro Music Festival. Rafael has sung secondary roles with Indianapolis Opera including the Imperial Commissioner in Madame Butterfly and the Messenger in La Traviata in addition to singing chorus in over four productions with the company. Previously attending Butler University, Rafael has sung roles including Gianni Schicchi, Sir Joseph Porter, Prison Warden Frank, and Grandpa Moss with Butler Opera Theater. Rafael has worked with artists such as conductors Emanuele Andrizzi, Joseph Rescigno, James Caraher, Arthur Fagen, David Effron, and Raymond Leppard; stage directors Candace Evans, Chris Alexander, Carroll Freeman, Vincent Liotta, Bill Fabris, and Joachim Schamberger; as well as coaches Ubaldo Fabbri, Donatella Dorsi, Kevin Murphy, Daniela Siena, and Mark Phelps. He has won a Jacobs Artistic Excellence Award, James Q. Mulholland Choral Scholar Award, La Musica Lirica Talent Award, and a Pi Kappa Lambda Performance Award.     Mu Phi Epsilon (ΜΦΕ) is a co-ed international professional music fraternity. Today, Mu Phi Epsilon has chapters both nationally and internationally. The fraternity supports achievement in music through the awarding of grants and scholarships, as well as music competitions, concerts, and summer music programs. Much of this work has been supported by the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation, an organization that has been in existence since 1963, as well as fundraising and donations.
