Lesson Details

I am a laid back teacher, but an honest one. I will never get lazy and overly praise a student when they can get better at something. I reward hard work, and I get very excited when a student reaches a goal they have been working toward.

The format of my voice lessons are half vocalizing (singing scales, playing with sounds, warming up, and generally working toward a natural, healthy, consistent tone) and half working on repertoire (working on specific pieces or songs). I do not like to ... accompany students on a piano myself, as it detracts my attention from the student. There are many books of music that provide a CD of accompaniment for students to practice with.

I ask a LOT of questions to help the student figure out what is going on in his or her body, how to articulate things that are going right, and things that do not feel so good (i.e. breath control, position of the soft pallet and larynx, tightness of the throat, vowel positions, etc... for voice). I focus on what they are feeling as well as what they are hearing. If a student can articulate what they feel physically, they can learn to start controlling their body to work towards improving their technique.

After 6 months of voice lessons with a student, they will have learned at least 2 pieces of music and techniques to start practicing on their own. They will also have a new confidence, whether they are beginners or continuing students, and hopefully, will love to sing!

I am currently a Masters candidate at UT Austin in Vocal Performance. I received my BA from Duke University in Music with honors, and minored in Literature. I have danced, sung, and performed all my life, and I have enjoyed sharing my passion for performing arts as a teacher with Take Lessons.

Throughout high school, college, and my professional career, I have been in over 100 shows (including choral concerts, musicals, recitals, and operas). I have had challenging choral and musical theater ... directors, revered music professors, and world famous voice teachers. They have helped me build a strong technique for my crafts, an academic appreciation for music, and tools to interpret music on my own to present my pieces as an artist. The skills they have empowered me with have given me a strong urge to help other students grow, using techniques I have learned from my past teachers.

I feel comfortable teaching beginning to intermediate students in voice (both classical and musical theater). I have a knack for making students comfortable - I was and still am a student, and I understand what it is like to have moments of frustration and to have a difficult time practicing on my own. I believe that I have great tips to help students monitor their own progress, to grow, and to feel confident about the techniques they are learning. I can give students help with music theory, diction, and history to help them better understand the art they are learning. Most of all, students can see how passionate I am about singing, and I believe it encourages their own passions.
