Professor on Record

MUSIC185, "The Concert Series," is a course designed to create informed audience members. Through reading my book, "Concerts Decoded: Listening Like You Mean It," and learning how to follow the music they are hearing during lectures, students gain the knowledge they need to actively listen to music. We go over the basics, and we also cover the performance differences between various musical styles. By the end of the course, students should feel comfortable critically listening to a performance and giving an informed opinion at the end of the concert.
Brass Technician
Nov, 2012 - May, 2013Seattle Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps
The brass section for the Seattle Cascades was comprised of mostly high school aged music students while I was there. We worked on sound production, concept of sound, rhythm, and musical expression. They needed the basics, but also an idea of what their goals should be for all of the skills they were acquiring. It was rewarding to work with a brass section that had potential and showed so much progress during my time with them.
TA Conference Lecturer/Facilitator
Aug, 2011 - Aug, 2013University of Washington
Each summer I prepare future TAs at the University of Washington for some of the challenges they are going to face. I've presented on classroom management, syllabus preparation, difficult classroom situations, and evaluating work in the fine arts.
