Overview

Music is the means to create a portal into our souls, so that we may see each other for who and what we are, not merely as what we do. I want to help foster those young, middle-aged, and not-as-young how to tap into their own soul portals through music so that they may find others' as well. I believe that in order to entertain others with your voice or your instrument playing, one must first be able to entertain oneself - all the while having fun doing it! As a recent graduate of the University of California, Davis with a double major in Music History & Ethnomusicology and African-American & African Studies; a former co-host of the popular hip-hop radio show ATF Radio: All Things Fresh on KDVS 90.3 FM; a former Music Director of The Afterglow of UC Davis; and a current Vocal Music Performance graduate student at the University of Redlands, I have come in contact and learned from a vast amount of different musicians and professionals. A classically-trained bass-baritone with roots in R&B, Soul, Rock, Pop, and Jazz, I have aspirations to help each and every student realize their full musical potential.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is very friendly, inviting, and audience-driven. In the beginning, I strive to refer to my presence in the lessons as a fly-on-the-wall, so to speak, in order for my students to get out of their own way and sing as if no one's watching. From there, I apply the audience aspect - singing not only for enjoyment, but for entertainment for yourself and for others as well. If one is able to build that frame of mind in their lessons, their actual performances will not be too far from what they've already dealt with before.

I provide teaching and repertoire books, as well as instrumentation for myself (i.e. guitar, misc. tools for specific lessons). I expect my students to provide a piano (or keyboard equivalent), pitch pipe, and instrument if applicable (i.e. guitar), and, of course, themselves!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Vocal Room with Piano; Keyboard, Classical Guitar, Electric Guitar with Amp (for in-home lessons)

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide teaching and repertoire books, as well as instrumentation for myself (i.e. guitar, misc. tools for specific lessons). I expect students to provide a piano (or keyboard equivalent), pitch pipe, and instrument if applicable (i.e. guitar).

*** Specialties ***
I utilize the Kodaly method for vocal performance, starting at the basic level of tonal scales (major, minor, harmonic, melodic, etc.) and Solfege application to serve as a foundational base; rhythm syllables such as "ta" and "doo". Additionally, foundational breath control is applied, as it is very important for the singer to learn how to control their breath and support their sound. From there, repertoire mimicry is applied, or what I call "phrase building," as it is important for any singer to be able to effectively create vocal phrases.

I utilize guitar repertory books such as Mel Bay's Children's Guitar Chord Book and Modern Classical Guitar Method books for guitar pedagogy. These allow the student to learn chords, picking and fingering techniques in a academic lesson while also learning performance techniques with an one-on-one instructor.

For piano, I use the publication A New Approach to Keyboard Harmony to learn chord progressions, sequences, modulations, realization of both figured and un-figured basses, improvisation, and score reading. Learning these techniques will help transition students seamlessly to various styles and genres that incorporate the piano, helping you learn and love the piano without frustrating stoppages that often lead us away from lesson continuity.

I specialize in Classical, R&B, Soul, Pop, Rock, Jazz and Opera styles.

Wonderful instructor! Milton has a great attitude and is a joy to be around. My son loves learning from him and we are very thankful for finding such a patient, creative and skilled instructor. Student's Review - Milton is an exciting and fun guitar teacher. He has exceeded expectations and made otherwise bland lessons interesting and fun. He is always quippy and easy to be around. Having him as an instructor has made me grow to love the guitar even more.

Voice lesson

Milton is a great teacher! He explains everything, teaches you theory and proper techniques. He is down to earth and makes you feel comfortable. He pushes you out of your comfort zone, but in a good way so that you can grow as a singer. I am very glad I chose to take lessons with him!

Excellent Vocal Teacher

Milton is a very patient vocal teacher. I have taken vocal lessons in the past and never learned so much as when Milton teaches. I have only had a couple of lessons with him and have learned so much already. He is teaching me the correct way to sing and breath and am currently getting used to singing the way he taught me. Very happy.

Milton is hands down AMAZING! :)

I've been with Milton for about almost a year already and he is just amazing! In the beginning I was very nervous to take singing lessons but Milton came in with a positive attitude. Milton is very friendly, funny, professional and always enthusiastic when asking questions about music. I use to be very shy, "never want to sing in front of people" type of girl, but ever since I started lessons with him, I sing all the time in front of people, starting to perform on stage, built A LOT of confidence, and found what type of musician I am. All the things he teaches me is VERY USEFUL, I apply everything we learn to my music and it has made a huge difference. I've come to learn that the tiniest things count! I highly recommend him and you'll have the best time!

Singing
Milton has knowledge and skills that makes him the man for the job. I'm glad we found Take Lessons and an instructor like Milton. I recommend both.

Milton is a very good and knowledgeable singing instructor, especially being one so young. He is clear in his instructions and makes my husband and me feel like he will be able to teach us to "sang" one day. He is not only teaching us voice but also explains the dynamics of the sounds, shapes, posture, etc that goes along with learning to sing properly. I'm looking forward to the day when we actually put everything he's teaching us into words and music.

Simply GREAT!

Student Perspective:
Milton has a great personality and welcomes you the minute you walk through the door. He is very kind and patient and has helped me improve a lot in just a matter of a few lessons!! Milton is super funny and easy to work with and he pushes you just enough during rehersal so that you can learn your capabilities. In his lessons you work together (everyones input matters). I have really enjoyed working with Milton and I will continue to do so.

Parent's Perspective:
My daughter is that Type A personality and doesn't believe in doing even her passion unless she has all the knowledge she can acquire in order for her to be comfortable. She self sought out a music teacher that could give her this knowledge. She found the Take Lessons website and then found Milton. She relentlessly inquired for me to please sign her up for singing lessons with him. I was so happy that she did the research herself that our journey began with Milton. Instantly they had a connection and she has grown tremendously vocally in the short amount of time she has been taking lessons with him. She has learned techniques that have expanded her range far beyond what she thought she was capable of acheiving. He is funny, makes her laugh, encourages her not to be afraid and knows just what she needs to push her a little further. He always inquires how she feels about what they are working on and also whether or not there is anything else she would like to focus on as well. They plan together which makes the lessons exactly what she needs. He ignites her passion fro music over and over and over again.
Thanks Milton, You are APPRECIATED!

Acting
Milton J. was on time and a complete professional.

For someone reentering the field of Acting and Musical Theater, Milton J was a perfect choice. He has range in his skill set to address any kind of Music and Theater genres.
I was so impressed, once we really had started on the lesson of what he has in his lesson. Quite a lot to do, that is deep behind the scenes and pre-performance set-up for the student to preset for a chararacter to come out of us. This, I remember from my Professional Acting for Television and Film days was what is called Actors Homework...in LA you are 2 scenes in before my former LA Teacher began to explain the pre-set tech that Milton J came with, right from the start.
Awsome teacher!
