    About Melissa C.

    I am a doctoral candidate in American Studies and African American Studies at Yale University. Prior to that, I studied English Literature in the Masters of Arts with a Creative Writing Concentration program at Fordham University and have published numerous short stories, scholarly articles, as well as a first novel. Before attending Fordham, I was awarded a Bachelor of Arts from New York University summa cum laude with a double major in Journalism and Latin American Studies. A former employee of NBC News, El Diario/ La Prensa and Launch Radio Networks, I have had articles and reviews published in a wide variety of forums including CNN.com, Latin Beat Magazine, Washington Square News, University Wire, El Diario/La Prensa, Women’s Studies, Words. Beats. Life: The Global Journal of Hip-Hop Culture, and The Bilingual Review.

    I am a teaching fellow at Yale University where I am ABD (All But Dissertation). I teach courses on US history and ethnic studies. Previous to that I was a teaching assistant at Fordham University where I taught history, composition and also worked as a writing tutor assisting students on everything from English assignments, to dissertations to graduate school applications, resumes and cover letters. I was a professional journalist, am also a published fiction writer and poet, as well as an academic so I offer a wide range of writing skills. Beyond this experience and education, I am approachable, energetic and love seeing students improve. I personalize my courses and responses to individual student interests to keep them engaged and challenged.
