About Me

Hello! I'm excited to work with you and teach you how to sing. Singing is great fun and is one of my favorite things to do! Some of my favorite types of music to sing include jazz, opera and Broadway standards. I'm always excited to learn what your favorite styles of music are because it allows me to help you be the singer you want to be!

Education:

I have studied vocal performance for ten years, and am a mezzo soprano. I teach classical voice, which gives students a solid ... foundation for a variety of singing styles. In California, I had the opportunity to study with Allen Cathcart, a retired international opera singer.

I have also had the opportunity to work with several vocal therapists and coaches. My work with them has provided an inside scope as to how tone should be properly produced.

Teaching Experience:

For many years, I have prepared people of all ages for musical performances. I began by working as a musical director at Spindrift School of the Performing Arts. At SSPA I taught basic music theory and singing technique while prepping a cast for a musical.

I co-directed "Aladdin" (the musical) at Roxbury Prep Charter School. During this unforgettable experience I worked with middle school aged students. We focused on how to express characters through music and movement.

Most recently, I've started work in vocal therapy, helping students who have experience vocal trouble produce a clearer, more comfortable tone . This particular experience often has people saying "you gave me my voice back"

Performance

There is no greater feeling than to perform. I have performed in choirs, musicals and more recently, jazz bands. As a teenager, I performed with the Peninsula Teen Opera, a company which employs professional opera singers, coaches, and directors to train young people to perform opera. I love to help students increase their level of confidence during their performance.

I spend my spare time working on writing songs as well as working on a short opera.

Singing is and always should be a joy! I put great value on having fun during lessons. I work with the student to figure out what he/she wants, whether it's to shine in an upcoming talent show, learn a few songs or audition for American Idol.

Voice:

Singing involves the entire body! We will find comfortable ... stretches you can do at home and in the studio to warm up your body. Three basic exercises will be assigned. The first will work with breath control. What does it feel like to breathe deeply? Where is the balance between taking in too much and too little air? The second type of exercise will be related to voice placement. How can a clear, forward sound be created? The third type of exercise will focus on vowel shaping. Vowel shaping assists singers in having the words they sing come out clearly.

Good performance energy is important. During my lessons I always place an equal amount of emphasis on the technique of singing as well as the energy and emotion behind it.

All ages, levels and personalities are welcome in my studio. Let the fun begin!

Performance Presentation:
What about that final step when you're ready to perform a song?

When working on a song, whether opera aria, musical theatre piece, or a song you wrote yourself, the preparation process is just as important as the presentation. What do the words mean to you? How can you affect an audience with the tone you create? What sort of energy does a song require? How do you create your own personal signature when you sing? These are questions to which I can assist you in finding an answer. Interpretation of text/melody in music is one of my greatest joys. I will help you in finding the character of a piece, the color, mood and energy to really wow your audience!

Speaking Voice:

I will work with you to achieve and maintain a comfortable speaking voice. We will identify when your voice becomes tense and create exercises to alleviate discomfort. Once we have established a good foundation we will focus on proper articulation, projection and voice placement.
