Matt G. has been training and performing on the stage for over ten years. A member of Actors Equity Association, Matt has spent the last several years as a company member at PlayMakers Repertory Company (LORT D) in Chapel Hill, NC. Casting has included: Ken in "RED," Karl Lindner in "A Raisin in the Sun," Steve and Karl in "Clybourne Park," Leo in "In the Next Room," and the Dauphin in "Henry V." Matt had the great honor of working with renowned directors such as Vivienne Benesch, Raelle Myrick-Hodges, Tracy Young, Mike Donahue and Joseph Haj - as well as veteran actors Michael Urie (Ugly Betty; Partners), Michael Winters (Gilmore Girls), and Stephen Caffrey (Tour of Duty; Longtime Companion). While performing on the PlayMakers stage, Matt spent three years pursuing his Master of Fine Arts in the Professional Actor Training Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His training and proficiency includes Stage Combat, Lacoq Mask, Shakespeare, Chekov, the International Phonetic Alphabet, Dialects, Linklater Voice, the Miller Voice Method, and Acting for Film. As a graduate student, Matt was hired as an undergraduate instructor in the Department of Dramatic Art, where he served for two years prior to completing his degree. Prior to UNC, Matt lived in New York City, training at the Atlantic Theater Company's Acting School and performing at The New York International Fringe Festival and with Gorilla Repertory Theatre. *** Lesson Details *** As a teacher I strive to strike a balance between intellectual analysis of the text and the impulsivity of the actor. Don’t get me wrong—academic ability should not be discounted. Understanding new acting methods, scene analysis, and table work all require critical thinking. However, once the work is on its feet, it does not serve the actor or the text to perform preconceived intellectual ideas. Stella Adler said, “The play is not in the words, it’s in you!” I fiercely want to pursue that balance with my students. So for my coaching sessions and tutorials, I have selected acting texts that speak directly and succinctly such as "The Intent to Live" by Larry Moss. An Adler protégé, Moss provides a practical approach to scene analysis, which I believe allows the new actor to move from concept to application more quickly. I mean, if the book doesn’t make you want to get on your feet and work, then find one that does. With my students I have worked to integrate movement and vocal training, which are proving themselves to be more and more inseparable. I direct vigorous physical and vocal warmups that release tension, ground the voice and body, and awaken impulses. My experience in this area is a hybrid of Linklater, Chuck Jones, and the Miller Voice Method (Scott Miller, NYU Graduate Voice instructor). I also lead discussions on muscular anatomy to help actors identify their unique areas of tension and stress. Anthony Hopkins said, “You can’t act unless you’re relaxed.” I don’t think he means relaxation to the point of collapse but rather reaching a place of physical readiness. Acting, especially in the theatre, is an athletic event, and we must be up to the task. On the whole I try my very best to establish an atmosphere of collaboration and support. I have the opportunity to learn just as much from my students as they do from me. An acting tutorial is not a classroom lecture but rather a laboratory experiment where artistic failure is welcome. And quite frankly, a good sense of humor is essential. If this collaborative, supportive environment is achieved, actor training devoid of the stranglehold of fear can flourish. This has been the case with my own training, and I plan to carry it forward as an instructor. One-on-one coaching will consist of working with monologues from published plays and screenplays. If an acting partner is available (i.e. if lessons are requested for more than one student at a time), then scene work is ideal. Taping for immediate review and feedback is also available. Audition Preparation for stage or screen auditions is also available. *** Travel Equipment *** I am equipped with video and audio recording equipment as well as a lighting rig. *** Specialties *** My teaching style is a hybrid of many acting methods, because no one method works for everyone. However, my primary acting texts are Stella Adler and Stanislavsky based. My vocal approach is a hybrid of Linklater, Chuck Jones, Alexander, and the Miller Voice Method (Scott Miller, NYU Graduate Voice instructor).

Matthew G.'s refreshing approach will allow you to find new ways of expressing yourself as an artist in a safe space I was in Matthew G.'s Acting for Non-Majors course at UNC Chapel Hill and I was surprised by how may new skills and approaches I learned in a semester's worth of time. It was so refreshing to have a theater instructor teach the way Matt does. Warm-ups and exercises designed to not only wake up your mind and body but to awaken your impulses and make you feel comfortable in the learning environment were really essential to Matt's approach. I found that also focusing on finding where each individual holds tension and releasing it was such a productive use of the time because it awakened us as actors in ways I had never been aware of before. All of the approaches Matt used with the group helped to build confidence and spark creativity which we used in the safe environment created. The course was composed of people of all levels and even so, everyone found room to grow in their performance. For me personally, Matt helped me get back into theater by guiding me and encouraging me in my performance in the safe space he created. I was able to freely express myself as an artist but also take away much more than expected. I highly recommend Matt as an instructor, his approaches might help even the most seasoned performer to discover new ways of expression!

Matthew G. helped me make the jump to stage I had been doing film production work and acting in short films for about ten years. The stage had been calling me and I was fortunate enough to take a class with Matthew G. and begin working on aspects of my acting that I had not yet delved into. We worked on basics and more advanced techniques, and during that time I gained the confidence to start auditioning for stage. Successfully passing a small audition first, I had a great first stage experience while taking Mathew's class. Four months later I landed my first big stage role and continued with studying acting. Four months after that I again successfully passed my next audition and was cast as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream. It was the thrill of a lifetime to get and play this role. All through this process I kept checking in with Matthew and he continued to counsel and mentor me on my acting skills and techniques as well as the communication and emotional aspects of exploring myself as an actor and deepening my understanding of the skills I was working on and the craft of acting. Overall I would have to thank Matthew G. for giving me a set of skills and tools to begin this process, and the confidence to follow through with my goals as an actor. His joy of the art form is also something that I take with me any time I walk into an audition or a role. And his return commitment to my growth and development as an actor has been immeasurable and I find comfort in his continued friendship and mentoring. As a side not I could not fairly end this review without also noting that Matthew G. is one of my favorite people to watch perform. The skills he taught me are evident when watching him take on role and explode with authenticity and the hard work that truly make his acting so enjoyable. I was lucky enough to work with or see Matthew G. perform for over two years in at least ten major and minor roles, and always giving a performance that will live on with me for the rest of my life. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to study and work with Matthew G. and implore any one who has the time to take advantage of an opportunity not to be missed. Thanks for everything Matthew. I look forward to watching your continued success.

Matthew G. will help you grow as an artist, wherever you are in the process I did plays in high school, but when I got to UNC-Chapel Hill I decided to keep acting as a hobby. I didn't take any acting classes or audition for any shows my first year, and in the absence of performing I realized I couldn't live without it; I decided to enroll in Matthew G's acting class for non-majors to get training and to prepare for future auditions. That class is one of the reasons I am a Dramatic Art major today. Matthew G. is not only an incredible actor, but an effective teacher of the art. The class I took was intended for people who either were interested in drama but were not majoring in it, or who needed a performing arts credit in order to graduate; there were quite a few students who had never acted before. Matthew G. made the class fun and interesting with his enthusiasm and knowledge, and he provided everyone with the opportunity for one-on-one coaching outside of class if the student felt they needed it. Students who were apprehensive of getting in front of the class and performing received his encouragement, and he did everything he could to put them at ease; by the end of the semester, everyone was more comfortable performing. If you are interested in acting but have no prior experience, Matthew G. would be a great fit for you; his passion for the art is contagious, and you will learn so much! Going into his class I had acted in plays, but I had never taken a class or had any formal training; I had a lot of questions throughout the semester about technique and the process. Matthew G. was always available not only to help me start answering them, but to share his own experiences and expose me to new ways of thinking about the art. My one-on-one rehearsals with him were incredibly helpful; I really struggled with monologue work, but his feedback and suggestions gave me tools that I have taken with me and am still using as I prepare for auditions. He was also helpful when answering my questions about the acting industry; he lived in New York City for a few years and is a great resource! His class was one of the best I've had at UNC; Matthew G. is not only professional, but he genuinely cares about his students and works with them to explore their full potential as artists. He has helped me to grow as an actress, and I can't encourage you enough to work with him!
