    About Matthew B.

Education: UCLA, Bachelor's of Arts in Linguistics and Italian Music Experience: 1) Trained Baritone: lessons given by Tenor Daniel Suk in L.A. Opera 2) 5 years, Bass, Baritone in UCLA Chorale 3) 3 years, Bass, Baritone, Tenor in YouthPhonics A Cappella: a community service based a cappella group which mentored students at a local L.A. high school in singing, a cappella, music theory, and college application/admittance/life. 4) Singer, Season 1 finale of 90210: A Party Can Ruin Your Whole Summer 5) 1 year private voice lessons to college students, 6 in total 6) Vocal Director for "HOOLIGAN at UCLA" Spring Showcase 2013 7) Awarded "Best Singer: Male" in HOOLIGAN Theatre Company at UCLA 8) Latest Role (theatre): Bruce Ismay, Titanic the Musical, HOOLIGAN Theatre Company, UCLA My vision for students is to not only embrace the talent that lay hidden, ready to be unleashed, but embrace who they are. Personally, music is about expression, and with that expression, needs to be an unabashed sense of confidence. I will work not only to transform my students into singers/musicians/actors, but simply into better human beings. Some say it's not over til the fat lady sings...I say it's not over until you look that fat lady in the face and take your rightful place beside her! Academic Experience: 1) Highest level Math: Multi-variable Calculus 2) Can read, write, and speak: Italian (proficient), Spanish (intermediate) 3) Raised by an English teacher, and adept at focusing papers on thesis. Also, apt at bolstering argument/language/flow/etc. 4) Took Princeton Review SAT prep course When it comes to academics, learning can sometimes be frustrating. That's why I contour my lessons to each individual student, so that they may learn the material, on their terms. There is nothing more satisfying than an "A HA!" moment, and that is my aim in each and every lesson. *** Lesson Details *** Each lesson will be different depending on what the student needs. Therefore, if a student has a song/piece selected and needs assistance in making it their own, work on riffs/runs, or performance technique, then we would warm-up, they'd show me what they have already, and from there I would work with them to manufacture the best presentation of the piece. Now, if a student is learning technique, then the lesson would revolve around acquiring those techniques through demonstration, application, and repetition. For students learning academics, the student would need to have material prepared and ready to work on. *** Travel Equipment *** It would be best if piano/keyboard were readily available, however I have access to one. *** Specialties *** I specialize in Voice, specifically Opera. I focus on technique and style. So riffing/runs would be a part of this. My degree is in Linguistics, so speaking is a specialty of mine, and I learned music theory during my time at UCLA. Acting has always been a passion of mine, especially musical theatre.
