Hi I'm Marty T. and there is nothing I love more than playing and teaching the guitar (except for my wonderful family)! I was born and bred in New York City where I learned the art of guitar playing from the finest musicians in the world. By the age of 16 I was performing in the famous Catskill Mountain hotels. Being surrounded by famous musicians and musical acts gave me the drive to continue my studies with renowned guitarist / teacher Howard Morgan. While attending the City of New York University I continued my studies with legendary guitarist Joe Monk. I also studied with Joe Ravo and Billy Bauer. By the time I graduated college, I had more musical work than I could handle so I opted to be a professional musician. In this endeavor I ended up playing every venue possible in the Tri State Area. From The Waldorf Astoria and Plaza Hotel to show bands to Country Club extravaganzas, from jazz to classic rock, blues, Brazilian and so much more. I boast a repertoire of literally thousands of songs....dedicated to memory! This extensive knowledge is passed through to my students in an exciting and more important, a FUN manner. When a student is having fun while learning I feel as if I have achieved a personal goal. I have performed with The Drifters, The Spinners, B.J. Thomas, The Tokens, Legends from Las Vegas and countless other name acts playing acoustic and electric guitar. I continue to perform on a regular basis all over Arizona. I am quite well known and respected as a guitarist and bandleader. *** Lesson Details *** In general, most lessons are divided into two sections. The first being the formal study of the instrument including the reading of music and the various techniques that incorporate the student's goals. The second part of the lesson is how we apply these techniques to songs. This is commonly known to my students as the "fun" part of the lesson. All students truly enjoy applying techniques learned to their favorite songs. After three to six months of lessons the student will be able to play their favorite songs. They will have also acquired the musical education to apply this knowledge to their goal, whatever that may be. I take an extremely laid back approach to teaching, incorporating humor and positive reinforcement. My students are asked to practice for a half hour per day and then then encouraged to "play" for at least another half hour. I never forget that if it weren't for the fun and joy, I would not be involved in music. *** Studio Equipment *** Designated music room with a baby grand piano, a keyboard, full PA system, amps and a recording system *** Travel Equipment *** I can provide a temporary guitar for a student. One of my instruments is 3/4 size for younger students. I will recommend books that the student should purchase (I can also obtain these books) Students should provide 2 chairs (no arms) and a music stand. *** Specialties *** I like to customize methods for the individual. I do prefer the Berklee series for more serious guitar students. I have used Alfred's for some younger ones. Personally, I was brought up on the Mel Bay method and I don't really care for it. Besides general guitar lessons I can offer instruction to bands as I play bass keys and drums as well. Music Theory is a very strong point for me. Ear training goes hand in hand with theory. Being a performer too, I can teach the student the ropes of stage performance.
