My name is Kyle S. and I'm incredibly passionate about music education for all ages. Over twenty years of playing all instruments has taught me there is not one specific way to teach music, so I change my curriculum for every student and completely customize what you learn to how you learn, and what you're interested in. I started teaching music lessons in after school programs when I was eleven and fell totally in love. I continued to do this for many years driving to neighboring towns, volunteering at church youth groups and local Boys and Girls Club all around my hometown.

I went on to study Music Education at Oregon State University and Guitar Performance at the University of Oregon. At each of these Universities I taught students my age, and a few professors, as well as locals in each town.

In Portland I've been gigging, playing on records, recording music for films, and volunteering every week at Nonprofit Music Schools around town to help underprivileged kids, and expose them to the joy of music. Give me a call and we can talk about what you're interested in, and get lessons started.

Look forward to hearing from you!

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm fairly laid back, and teach from a number of different texts depending on the interests of the student. Each student is different, and I vary instruction accordingly. I have a lot of experience songwriting, composing, and playing as a sideman in groups on different instruments. I've been part of bands led by myself and been hired by other people, as well as composing for different groups of instruments from trios to full orchestras.

If there is interest, I can also provide worksheets based on the curriculum and standards held by the University of Oregon, and Portland State University.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Private home studio equipped with a many guitars, a piano, a Wurlitzer, electric bass and amplifier, two drum kits, and a beautiful kitty.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitars, amplifiers, and notebooks for all students even if they do not own guitars or amplifiers. I also make copies and email attachments of all homework, and record lessons and send them to students to listen to when practicing.

*** Specialties ***
I've been playing and studying guitar since I was seven years old. I've attended Berkley School of Music summer workshops, camps, seminars, and presented music theory papers at conferences at the University of Oregon. I can and am willing to teach any type of musical style or interest to any skill level!

Student Reviews

Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Patient and thorough teacher Kyle is teaching both of my kids and both are beginning players. A five year old on drums and a ten year old on guitar. I have been so pleased with the way he tailors instruction to their age, attention span, and knowledge. I am especially pleased at the way he is teaching musicianship as a whole (music theory, sight reading, basics of structure) along with the fundamentals of the instrument itself. I like the way he creates a learning environment where the kids feel safe to ask questions, or admit they don't understand something. He never talks down to them, but rather treats them as partners in their own learning. They are both having fun and I would definitely recommend him as a teacher. March 8, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Instructor Kyle is thorough and passionate about his teaching. I am learning a lot. I thought I was too old to learn music sight reading and to become proficient on the piano. I highly recommend Kyle. January 15, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by I'm lovin' it I am an adult student trying to learn a couple nice songs to play and build on lessons I took when I was a kid. Kyle has a real depth of music knowledge but is suiting my lessons so I am challenged but not too much. We are covering all aspects as we go; sheetmusic reading, technique, music theory. I am enjoying playing piano again. December 11, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by piano instruction Kyle S. has been working with my Son for several months and his interaction and enthusiasm are impressive. He works with classical music as well as music which my Son enjoys such as Sonic. I would highly recommend Kyle to anyone looking for a music teacher especially for younger people. December 8, 2013

He also understands my goals and structures his lessons accordingly. I would recommend him to anyone looking to learn the guitar. December 7, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by A teacher to recommend Kyle is great! Even though I started with the intention of only learning how to play a few songs and nothing more, Kyle slowly introduced me to fundamentals of music and a better understanding of how to read music so that in the future I can continually learn and remember music even if I don't study all the time. He has taught me more than I thought I could do. Atmosphere is relaxed and makes the lessons fun. December 3, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by creates a very inviting environment Ethan, our 10 yr old, has been taking piano lessons for approximately 5 years. We had recently lost his last piano instructor due to his increase in prices..Ethan enjoyed this person very much and we knew finding another teacher he was as receptive to may prove to be a challenge... We definitely found this in Kyle. He creates an environment which is open, safe to ask questions and Kyle's confidence in his own teaching ability I feel gives Ethan just what he needs to want to keep practicing and progressing with his music. Kyle is open to allowing Ethan to try new instruments and even gave Ethan music to learn to one of his favorite characters, Sonic! I find his professionalism and quick communications with questions very refreshing. He does what he says he will do and Kyle has been a great teacher for our Son. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a music teacher. April 17, 2013
