I specialize in the modern application of traditional practices. I keep things real world, without neglecting solid music theory and history.

Lesson Details

PIANO

For beginner piano students I use the Faber Method and have had great success.

In addition to the book work, I continually find ways to sharpen sight reading and ear skills through the use of scales, chords, songs, fun exercises and pattern recognition exercises.

Almost everything about the piano can be thought of and broken down into a pattern that makes it not only easy to understand, but easy to move around the piano and expand on. These simple patterns can be learned by ... anyone no matter their age or experience.

VOICE

We use our voice every day. The first things to think about when getting vocal training is the answer to two questions. “What am I already doing right?”, and, “What have I been doing wrong?”.

After we know where our strengths are, we can build on that naturally to work out our bad habits.

The next thing we need to focus on is confidence and perspective. This comes naturally once our strengths are understood and we find places to showcase those. By finding and/or creating performance and recording opportunities, a vocalist learns a lot about themselves recognizing how to be objective about their growth.

This broader training is enhanced with exercise that address our breathing, ear training and pitch recognition, word pronunciation and expression.

My first goal as a music mentor is simple.

Love.

People work hard at things they love doing.

The music mentorship journey is first and foremost about finding and cultivating a love for music. Few things bring as much joy as hearing something in your head or on the radio or from a friend and having the skills to sing or play it with confidence.

I discovered this love at a young age and developed my skills by taking lessons and singing in choirs through college where I earned a ... degree in Music Composition.

My love of teaching developed shortly after as I learned to help music come alive in other people integrating both what I learned in formal settings and from my experience on the stage and in the studio.

With multiple albums released and countless hours of stage time built up around the world, I bring to the table “book knowledge” from my understanding of theory and music history, but also practical applied skills.

I love what I do as a working musician and I love seeing other people experience the joy of music.
