Hello prospective students! My name is Kathy and I want to share with you a little about my training and experience both as a performer and as a teacher.
I hold both Bachelor and Master degrees in Voice Performance from the University of South Carolina. While completing my Master degree, I taught voice for two years as part of the Vocal Pedagogy program at the University. I have also maintained a private voice studio since 1994 and served on the faculty of Carolina Music Academy from 1999-2003.
I love singing and have spent much of my life as an active performer, being seen in major opera and musical theater roles with Opera at USC, FBN productions, Studio Lirico (Cortona, Italy), Workshop Theater, Town Theatre, Playhouse Family Theater, and the Chapin Theater. I worked professionally with the South Carolina Opera from 1998-2001 where I made my professional opera debut as Berta in the Barber of Seville in 1999.
I have also had a busy solo career, performing with such ensembles as USC's Concert Choir, University Chorus, Columbia Choral Society, Saint Andrews Road Chancel Choir, St. Martin's in the Field Chancel Choir, Washington Street Chancel Choir and Shandon Methodist Church Choir.
I am also an active Christian artist. I spent three years as the lead female vocalist for the Christian band Praise Connection, and was featured on two Christian albums. I was also the Praise and Worship leader for Windsor UMC for over 8 years and am a contemporary Christian songwriter.
I have a background in vocal jazz, having participated in the award winning collegiate vocal jazz ensemble Shades of Blue for two years.
I have been teaching others to be singers and performers for over 19 years. I love sharing my experience and helping others to overcome the bad habits, negative mindsets and other blocks to becoming a successful singer and performer.
*** Lesson Details ***
When a student comes to my studio for the first time they are always a little nervous because they don't really know what to expect. So I want to share a little bit about our how the lessons are set up and what you can expect to learn.
I know that stress and tension is counterproductive to students. When you hold tension in your body it will affect how you sing. So I take a more laid back, relaxed approach with my students which allows us to have a free atmosphere in which to learn how the voice works so that they can grow.
I always tailor each lesson to the needs and goals of the individual student. I want you to be successful and so setting goals in an important part of the lesson process.
In the first 3 to 6 months, we will work on the following:
-keeping the body relaxed and easy to facilitate more natural singing
-correct posture for singing
-proper breathing technique
-basic music theory
-performance skills
-memorization technique
-improved diction
-learning to communicate a song to an audience
And much more!
I'm looking forward to meeting you and helping you to become a confident, successful singer!

As a holistic health coach and the owner of Simple Clean Living, I can help clients to move away from a toxic, chemical filled diet of packaged, processed and fast food and make the transition to whole, real foods. Eating real food is very satisfying and I can help you to discover how to cook quick, tasty and nourishing meals which will help to improve your health and increase your energy. I will help you to discover which foods work best for your body for optimal performance.
