About Me

Growing up, Kate participated in every musical activity she could: from choir to handbells, concert bands to jazz bands, and marching bands to rock bands. After taking years of private lessons in clarinet, piano, bass, and guitar, she chose clarinet as her primary instrument. Kate graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2007 with a B.M. in Clarinet Performance. She studied clarinet with Professor J. David Harris. She also studied piano and bass as minor instruments, taking ... 4 semesters of group classes and one year of private lessons, respectively.

As a young professional clarinetist, Kate has already had a number of notable performances. In 2006, she performed at Carnegie Hall as a member of the UIUC Wind Symphony. She played with the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic in Millennium Park at the Pritzker Pavilion. This 2008 concert titled "Hope In Action" honored Nelson Mandela, and along with the orchestra featured famous Chicago musicians Orbert Davis, Dee Alexander, Ari Brown, and the Soul Children of Chicago. Her most recent performance with CJP was on March 11, 2010 at the Auditorium Theatre. This concert featured celebrated Chicago jazz vocalists Terisa Griffin, Maggie Brown, and Dee Alexander. Special guests included T'Keyah Crystal Keymah and the Soul Children of Chicago. The Chicago Jazz Philharmonic is a 55-piece jazz orchestra which performs original compositions (composed by founder and director Orbert Davis) that blur the lines between classical and jazz. Kate is also a regular member of the Wheaton Municipal Band. The WMB performs weekly outdoor concerts each summer in Wheaton, Illinois' Memorial Park.

Kate's diverse musical interests motivate her to teach. She enjoys sharing her love for music and artistic expression with students of all ages. After teaching her peers as a section leader in band for years, Kate began teaching younger students privately in 2000. She enjoys the freedom private lessons offer her as a teacher to tailor the lesson to the student. She understands there are many ways of learning and believes there are at least as many ways of teaching. In addition to teaching privately, Kate also teaches general music classes in the Chicago Public Schools through the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic education program. These classes focus on music appreciation, basic theory, beginning piano, percussion, recorder, and handchimes. She is the handchime specialist for the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and teaches handchime classes during the summer CJP Jazz Academy. Her goal as a teacher is to pass on lessons of patience, appreciation, confidence and dedication to her students. She hopes her students will apply these lessons to their musical studies and throughout all areas of their lives.

Equipment:

I expect piano students to have a keyboard or piano for practice at home. Clarinet students should have their own clarinet and reeds. All students should bring all lesson books, worksheets, and notes to each lesson. I have lesson books/resources that I can provide for the first lesson, and then I will work with my student to find the right materials for their level.
