Hi, my name is Justin. I am a professional, gigging guitarist in the Chicago area and am currently a private guitar instructor at School of Rock in Naperville. I just graduated from
Columbia College Chicago with my Bachelor’s in Music with a focus in Jazz Studies. I have gigged (and am gigging) in numerous bands of various genres ranging from rock, funk, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop and have performed at venues such as The Metro, Concord Music Hall, The Cubby Bear, City Winery, Martyr's, Subterranean, and many more.
My number one priority as a teacher is to ensure that the lessons are focused on what the STUDENT wants to learn. I feel as if this method will truly help bring out the best in a student, as it will give them a genuine, self-inspired goal to work towards.
*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will vary depending upon the student and their goals in taking guitar lessons. If the student is looking to become a professional guitarist, study at music school, or anything of a very serious nature, I am happy to set up lessons in a very regimented fashion to help improve every facet of their playing (improvisation, solo transcriptions, theory, harmony and ear-training, sight-reading, technique, composition, etc.) On the other end of the spectrum, if the student just wants to have a relaxed lesson and just learn how to play some of their favorite tunes that is absolutely cool too. The lessons can go as far as you want to take them!
*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide an amplifier, guitar, extra cables, tuner. I would expect the student to have a guitar, an amplifier and cable (if playing an electric), a tuner, and whatever material that would be covered in the lesson.
*** Specialties ***
While my degree is in Jazz Studies, I have played in gigging bands of various genres ranging from Funk, Rock, Hip-Hop, R&B, Jam Band, etc. I am a very comfortable and accomplished improviser and composer (I have written a good chunk of the music for most of the bands I have played/are playing with) and have a great understanding of Music Theory, ranging from intro theory to advanced Jazz theory.
I teach one-on-one private lessons, direct and run a "Rookies" class (Introduce music and give very introductory instruction on guitar, bass, drums, and keys through song and games to first and second graders), as well as directing bands for kids ranging from the ages of 5-18 beyond the beginner phase.
