    About Joshua P.

I am a professional guitarist, bassist and educator with over a decade of experience providing lessons for students of all levels. I hold a degree in music from NYU and have taught independently, through schools, and for Sony Music Entertainment. I have extensive experience performing in a wide variety of musical situations including rock, jazz, blues, pop, funk, R&B, top 40/dance and gospel bands. I am comfortable teaching pretty much any style! We'll cover all the fundamentals you need to become the musician you want to be, whether it's learning basic scales and techniques, chord shapes and rhythms, melodies and songwriting, improvisation and ear training...the list goes on. Any and all styles welcome for guitar and bass--rock, jazz, blues, funk, soul/R&B, finger picking, acoustic, you name it! *** Lesson Details *** I believe the best way to stay inspired is to learn music that you love. That doesn't always mean just learning your favorite songs--it also means learning the foundations on which that music is built. Learning your fundamentals is of the utmost importance regardless of the sound you are going for, but combining technical knowledge with passion and emotion is what makes music fun and, well, musical! I will show you all the scales, finger exercises and technique builders you'll need, but more importantly I'll show you how to use those skills in a MUSICAL way. Drawing on styles of established music as well as your own ideas, together we'll discover your own unique voice as a musician. *** Studio Equipment *** Fender Stratocaster American Series, Fender Telecaster Classic Vibe, Gibson Les Paul Standard, 1974 Gibson ES-335, Martin DM acoustic guitar, Antonio Aparacio classical nylon string guitar, Alleva-Coppolo RA5 Jazz Bass, Fender Vintage Reissue Jazz Bass, Euphonic Audio bass amplification, Fender and Pignose guitar amplification, 1973 Fender Rhodes Mark I, Pearl Drumset *** Travel Equipment *** I will bring my own guitar and, if the student is learning electric guitar, I can also provide an amplifier. The student is expected to have his/her own guitar and is highly encouraged to have an amplifier of his/her own. I can provide my computer for listening purposes but I would much prefer the student to have his/her own. The student should also have a notebook and staff paper. *** Specialties *** Ear training, aural recognition and learning by ear as well as reading music. I have experience playing all styles from jazz to pop to blues/R&B and encourage the student to develop reading skills in addition to being able to pick up a song by ear. Proper technique and relaxed playing is also of the utmost importance.
