    About Jonathan H.

I like to try to simplify things as much as possible. I go by Jon, and I have been tuned into music since sixth grade. I hopped around from instrument to instrument until finally settling on the trombone. Having had that experience, I was able to become a reasonably good trombonist in a fairly short amount of time. College proved to me that there isn't anything else I'd rather be doing than playing my instrument. I am currently still in school, however, I gig with local bands when I can find them. I have received a variety of performance-based scholarships, which have allowed me to continue my musical education and hopefully help you with yours too. I am currently a semester away from my AA in Jazz Studies from American River Community College, but my hope is not that you think of me as a qualified degree keeper, but rather a qualified musician whose passion towards music is as contagious as smiles are with laughter. My goal is to teach my students how to express themselves musically because music is an art and that is what the arts are fundamentally about. *** Lesson Details *** I try to tailor my lessons exactly to what I feel each individual student needs to ensure that they see themselves improve. I teach my students what I feel will be the best for them to learn based on their goals and ask that they have something they want to learn in return. I feel that learning is a partnership between the student and the instructor. An example of a lesson after the first couple might go like this: I start the lesson going over technical concepts that most students tend to find to be a drag, even though this is the stuff that really helps them get better. Then I will ask them about what they would like to learn about for next time so I can have something ready for them to focus technically on next week. After that, we will review the material the student was wanting to learn about the previous week. This helps to ensure a strong teacher-student relationship, which is my ultimate goal, because who knows, maybe one day I will be taking lessons from you once you master your craft. I tend to be more on the laid back side if you are the type of person who practices and takes music at least somewhat seriously and I can tell you are progressing. For those that don't practice at all, I can be a little bit more strict. Strict enough to send home a practice log so I can see that students are putting the time in. My goal after three to six months is that my student will be able to enjoy music, whether it is by performing with a group, solo, or at home in a private studio, or by listening to others who can perform and being able to respect the time and energy those people put into their craft. If I can excite your inner-creative genius, I feel that I have done my job as a music teacher. *** Studio Equipment *** Living Room: couches, two chairs, parents can sit in on lesson *** Travel Equipment *** I can provide whatever I'll need to ensure that the student learns what they want to learn. I expect them to provide an instrument and a positive attitude. *** Specialties *** Jazz and all of its components
