    About John S.

I have been in many performing groups, from rock to metal to folk to jazz. I have background in original composition; I sing backup vocals and have experience with production. I have recorded with a number of groups in different genres. I am currently recording an album with Radio Mystery (indie/rock); I also perform with a European Cafe band, Due Zighi Baci, and with a folk trio, the Kyle Martin Band. My background: I began studying orchestral percussion at age 7 and received my first drum set at age 8. I then studied drums with Mike Brennan, learning the fundamentals of reading, coordination and independence, rhythmic ear training, etc, and continued to work with him until age 16, when he told me it was time to take the next step as he had taught me everything he knew. I went on to study with Tom Hayashi, focusing on funk and jazz. In 2004, I was accepted to the University of California at Santa Cruz and began taking private lessons with George Marsh (who played with John Abercrombie and David Grisman). I declared a major in music, learned theory, and performed with with fantastic musicians such as Stan Poplin, Ray Brown (trumpet), and Rob Klevan. In 2008, I was accepted to the California Institute of the Arts to pursue a Master’s Degree (MFA) in Jazz Studies; it was here that I developed a high level of musical prowess and creativity, studying with many of the top players and educators in the LA area: Joe LaBarbera, Aaron Serfaty, Randy Gloss, Larry Koonse, Darek “Oles” Oleszkiewicz, Alphonso Johnson, Charlie Haden, Vinny Golia, Howie Shear, Alfred Ladzekpo, and Andrew Grueschow. Although my formal studies have focused on music theory and jazz, I have performed in a variety of genres. I have taught music for 12 years, and I look forward to supporting your individual interests and growth. *** Lesson Details *** My lessons are based around the goals, desires, and background of the student. I have always had a passion for music, and it is this passion for learning, teaching, and discovery that can make the learning experience fun and unique. My approach to teaching is laid back, yet focused; I allow the student to guide the lesson while providing tools and insight from my own musical and performing experiences. For example: with a drum set student, core areas of study include technique, coordination, interpretation, and performance. Depending on the student's proficiency, I will assign practice exercises, listening activities, and self-assessment of progress. I use a combination of reading materials, various forms of media, and technical applications. After three to six months, the student will have advanced in their technical proficiency, will have found comfort with their instrument, and will have made steps toward accomplishing their goals. *** Studio Equipment *** Studio in home w/ 2 drum sets, keyboard, and seating for parents *** Travel Equipment *** Students need their own drum set, percussion instruments, books, and other materials. *** Specialties *** Jazz (ensemble and big band), rock, funk, world (African, Latin, Gamelan), classical, hip-hop. I have studied the Molar Method for technique, and Inner Drumming (George Marsh).
