My Specialties
For drum set and percussion, I use many methods books as well as solos in which my students can apply the methods taught. For drum set, I focus a lot on improvising fills and solos. Improvisation is a skill a drum set player must learn and with which they must be comfortable. As for concert / hand percussion, I have different resources to aid the students' learning from books of mallet percussion solos, to multi-percussion etudes, to transcriptions of Mamady Keita djembe solos. All of these can either be purchased at local music stores, or copied for free if they are out of print or public domain. With music performance, I would like to eventually bring in an outside music specialist to sit-in on a lesson and observe how the student performs and give their own critique. I feel it is essential for students to hear outside input about their performing. With Music Theory, I have several theory books to help me guide the student in whatever direction he or she chooses. If I am working with a beginner, I will usually start with my own teachings via exercises I have written on Finale. I typically need a piano in the room, but can use my computer. Anything for electronic music will require the student to have their own computer. Preferably Macintosh, but Windows computers are acceptable as well.
