I recently moved to Chicago to complete my dissertation for Arizona State University's Doctorate program. During my 6 years at ASU I taught voice lessons privately and at the collegiate level in Phoenix. I have taught almost every type of singing style at every age and professional level; Classical, Opera, Musical Theater, R&B, Folk, Reggae, from professional musicians to enthusiastic people who want a new hobby. I am an active opera singer looking to make Chicago my new home base. Pedigree - BM in Vocal Performance from the University of Montana MM in Opera Performance from Arizona State University DMA in Vocal Performance from Arizona State University (ABD anticipate completion Fall 2014) Philosophy - Learning how to sing is just like any other physical activity. Everyone can do it. But if you want to be good at it you had better work! I create a supportive and kind atmosphere in my studio. It is a safe place where mistakes are precious learning moments and perfection is strived for but never accomplished. I base my analogies on the physiological realities of singing but I use my student's own perceptions of the sound to individually reach my students on their own level. Please feel free to ask me any questions

Joel is an amazing teacher! He is knowledgeable and very passionate about his career. His style goes far beyond just a point and sing approach, he makes it a point to get to know each of his students and goes above and beyond to learn their voice type and learning style so he can better understand how to train them. In the four years I studied with Joel he not only trained my voice but also trained me in proper singers health and etiquette (Vocal health tips, Proper stage dress etc.) He helped me prepare multiple theatre and college audition repertoire and also inspired me to pursue a career in vocal performance. I would highly recommend Joel to anyone who wants to further their knowledge or begin a new journey in the world of music.

It’s hard to put into words what Joel W has done for my voice. His teaching ability extends far beyond just imparting proper technique, though he does that extremely well. The way he is able to delve into how my mind works, how I experience music, and how I learn and then to teach me in language that I am wired to understand is an incredible gift. He not only expedited the process of my progress but he also opened the door for me to discover the rich artistry of singing: the textures, the colors, the emotions, and the carefully crafted details of a beautiful voice. Far from a cookie-cutter approach, he helped me to find my unique voice and celebrate its strengths. He is always eager to give me the tools I need to become the singer I have always hoped to be and, under his tutelage, I cannot believe how far I have come."

I trained with Joel in Arizona for a year. I gained confidence as a singer as I started to understand and apply the technique. You know that he is knowledgeable because of the degrees he carries but I would add that he is knowledgeable in the operatic technique and the voice overall because of his own application that he demonstrates in the studio to get his point across. He has a great voice and you can hear him utilizing the technique that he teaches. He makes it a point to get to know you and how you learn so that he can better explain things. He is serious about his profession, owns his own opera start-up, and is also a performer. If you are willing to work, you will not be disappointed by the results you will hear. I can confidently recommend him to anyone who is looking to learn how to sing and/or improve their voice!
