About Joe M.
Music has always been my passion and primary focus! I have been playing the piano and composing music since I was 8 years old, and started recording music at age 12. I then continued on to accompany my high school choir and musical theater productions.
After high school, I continued my study at Berklee College of Music, where I studied as a Piano Principal with a dual major in Film Scoring and Contemporary Writing & Production. I now have over 10 years of experience accompanying choirs and theater productions, and 4 years of experience as a Musical Director, teaching music for youth theater productions both in Philly and New York City.
In addition to my piano performance and teaching experience, I have composed and recorded original music for over a dozen short and feature films. I have composed, produced, and recorded the electronic dance/pop music singles âSo Alive â(2007 KULT Records) and âAre You Kiddinâ Me? â(2010 Imajination Records). I, most recently, co-produced and recorded a remix released on Grammy nominated recording artist BTâs box set âThese Re-Imagined Machines.â
My experience spans many styles and disciplines, and my knowledge in theory, recording, performance, and the music industry, in general, is something that I would like to share with anyone wanting to learn it!
*** Lesson Details ***
My typical lesson will be laid back, but goal-driven and designed to inspire a strong love for music. We will learn a lot, but have fun at the same time. Through a combination of learning your favorite songs and developing basic skills, I hope to foster, in every student, a deep connection to music, supported by a strong understanding of it. Most importantly, I want to see all my students feel confident in their abilities and want to play all the time!
It is important that my piano students receive a thorough musical foundation. Together, we will not only learn music reading skills, but also learn some songs by ear. We will study scales, arpeggios, technique, and at least the fundamentals of music theory and ear training. The better you understand what you are playing, the easier it will be to play.
I cater my approach to each individual student, and I openly welcome input from both the students and their parents regarding the student's most effective learning style and capabilities. Together we will set goals that ensure a healthy progression.
Music Recording students can study with me to learn to use any recording software of their choice. The programs that I use the most for music recording are Logic, Pro Tools, Digital Performer, and Garage Band, however recording concepts are universal. You will be learning both live recording and electronic music production inside a functional home studio.
Music Theory students will learn or review the basics of scales, keys, and chords, and can then choose to study classical and/or jazz theory. If you have previous theory knowledge, we can pick up where you left off.
I am here to offer my knowledge to anyone of any age, and at any level, regardless whether you are just looking for a fun new hobby or a long and successful music career!
