Singing- For general singing I teach Broadway, jazz or pop.

Opera Voice- I teach art songs from all time periods and languages including Italian, German, French, English, Spanish and Portuguese; as well as arias, scenes, roles and chorus parts in operas.

Piano- I specialize in classical piano.

Lesson Details

For me, the most important part of any music lesson is you, the student, and helping you grow and learn based one your unique interest in music.

Whether you already love singing or playing, or just want to try something new, I will make sure to find a balance of pieces that will help you grow technically as a musician, and the styles that you really enjoy or that drew you to music in the first place. Because of this, the actual curriculum of the lessons I teach will vary greatly depending ... on your level and what genre of singing, or instrument, you are interested in learning.

I do expect my students to work on their assigned music over the week and to come prepared to all of their lessons because it takes a sense of curiosity and commitment towards music and practicing if you want to improve. However, if you encounter problems with a certain part of a piece that you can't get past, or something big comes up during the week, all you have to do is let me know and come with questions that we can work through together during your lesson.

About

Jocelyn is a lyric-coloratura soprano who has been said to have a voice that "shimmers like a strong golden thread". This past fall she charmed audiences in the role of Lucy in Gian Carlo Menotti's opera "The Telephone" with San Diego State University Opera Theater. Other productions she has performed in with SDSU Opera Theater include "The Mikado", "Die Fledermaus" and "Street Scene", as well as excerpts as Norina from "Don Pasquale", Nanetta from "Falstaff", Zerlina from "Don ... Giovanni", and the Niece in "Peter Grimes". She has also performed with Lyric Opera San Diego in productions of "A Waltz Dream", "Trial By Jury", the world premier of "Rumpelstiltskin" composed by Nicolas Reveles and "Candide". In addition, she performed in a benefit scenes concert organized by the the SDSU chapter of StudentNATS (Students of the National Association of Teachers of Singing) where she performed scenes from "Hansel and Gretel" as Gretel, and Laurie in "The Tenderland".  This past spring she presented DREAM|LIFE a Staged Senior Recital at SDSU, where she also gave a Junior Recital the previous year, as well as performing a Senior Recital in high school.  

Jocelyn has participated in the Emerging Artist Program at OperaWorks, the San Diego Opera Summer Workshop and the Theater of Art Song at the Vancouver International Song Institute in Vancouver, Canada.  She spent a summer studying French at the Institut Catholique in Paris, France, and also attended a year of school in Portogruaro, Italy with the American Field Service. She has been a member of StudentNATS at SDSU and served as the Executive Committee Secretary for two years, where she performed in numerous benefit concerts and fundraisers put on by the organization.
