Specialties

I specialize in classical art song, especially German Lieder, operatic arias, and preparing for auditions & performances. For piano, I use Alfred's teaching method for beginners of all ages. I incorporate music theory into each lesson for both voice and piano students. For voice, I use a large variety of songbooks, depending on the student's skill level and interest in various musical genres.

Lesson Details

I tend to be a laid back teacher, with a bubbly personality! On the other hand, I can be quite strict when it comes to teaching correct technique, and am very thorough in that regard. For my voice students, I never assign a song the student does not like, since the student is less likely to practice and therefore unlikely to reach his/her true potential. For my piano students, I ask them to fill out a weekly practice log, which keeps the student honest with him/herself. When my younger students ... "pass off" on their latest song, I let them choose a sticker!

For piano, I use Alfred's Piano Methods, for both youth and adult students. For voice, I use a variety of songbooks, as well as assign weekly vocalises. For students that need to learn basic music notation/theory, I use the Master Theory series and assign short exercises each week.

After 6 months, I expect my students to understand basic notation, have a firm foundation on healthy technique and how to help themselves stay on the right track, and ready to play/sing numerous fun songs for their friends and family!

Jill graduated from SDSU in 2010 with a Bachelor's of Music degree in Vocal Performance. She has been studying voice for 10 years now, and also grew up playing violin, viola, and piano since age 8. Jill currently maintains a multi-faceted career as a classically-trained soprano soloist, choir director, and private music instructor. She hopes to achieve a Masterʼs degree in Speech Pathology within the next few years, and has a passionate and serious commitment to teach healthy singing and piano ... technique to students of all ages!
