My name is Jeremiah S. I was raised in a family of musicians, so music has been in my life since before I can remember. My father, cellist of the Audubon Quartet holds the distinction of being the founding member of the 1st American String Quartet to ever win an International String Quartet Competition. Both of my brothers and stepmother are professional musicians as well leading successful careers as performers. I began my journey with cello at the age of 7 and went to my first summer music festival at age 12 and continued to attend summer festivals each summer after. I left home at the age of 17 to complete my high school education at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Northern Michigan. While at the Academy my string quartet participated and won a prize at the 1998 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition. I went on to complete my Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance from The Cleveland Institute of Music in 2002 studying with Richard Aaron, then attained my Master of Music Degree in cello performance in 2004 from The Juilliard School in NY studying cello with Joel Krosnick of the Juilliard String Quartet. I've spent the majority of my summers studying chamber music with the top chamber musicians while studying at conservatory, but also spent 2 concentrated years of studying the orchestral repertoire during my fellowship with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach under the direction of Maestro Michael Tilson Thomas. I had the privilege of working with and sharing the stage with the most acclaimed soloists and conductors of the world while at NWS as well as having the honor of performing the Shostakovich Cello Concerto no. 1 with the NWS as a competition winner of the annual competition. In addition to my education in cello performance I also have another Bachelor Degree of Music in Music Production and Recording Technology from Shenandoah University. I've toured Europe, Asia, and the US with various chamber ensembles like A Far Cry, and recorded and album with Arcos Chamber Orchestra on a Germany Tour in 2008. In 2013 I produced an album of the Bach Cello Suites 1-3 with Bassist Jory Herman of the San Diego Symphony, which is available on Spotify, iTunes, and Amazon. In 2012 I joined the Hausmann String Quartet based in San Diego which became Artist in Residence of the music school at San Diego State University. During my time with the Hausmann Quartet we toured Taiwan, taught applied lessons at the university and coached chamber groups as well as founded a chamber music program and music series at the university. In addition to our partnership with SDSU we became the resident quartet of Mainly Mozart. Before moving up to the Bay Area, I was also head of the recording services at the music school at SDSU. My extensive teaching experience has brought me to various music festivals across the country. I've taught private lessons to absolute beginners who never had lessons to advanced students whom won concerto competitions, from ages 6-65. I've coached chamber groups consisting of children from elementary school through college to adult amateurs. I've given orchestral cello sectionals to youth symphonies and festivals as well as given chamber music masterclasses at universities all over Taiwan during the Hausmann Quartet tour.
*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching begins with the basics. My first objective is to make sure my students have are setup well, with no bad habits and gain an understanding of body mechanics in relation to the cello, so it becomes an extension of yourself. After my students feel comfortable holding the bow and instrument, we begin exploring the complexities of sound production and I cover the basic elements of music theory so when we start learning music from the page, the symbols all make sense. I select repertoire at the pace of the student's progress and teach a universal method of scales, arpeggios, and double-stops as well. All of my students will gain the tools to play any 4 octave major, harmonic minor, or melodic minor scale in every key, by learning just 3 universal fingerings. As well as learning a universal system to play 8 different arpeggios in any key as well. My strong focus on initial setup and technical foundation will allow you to overcome any challenges you may faces while we explore the vast repertoire of etudes, sonatas, songs, chamber music, orchestra rep, and concertos. I tailor each lesson to the progress and commitment of each individual and give all the necessary tools to achieve any goal. You will learn practice techniques that will help you learn music quickly and efficiently.
If you choose to take lessons with me you will have the distinct advantage of studying with a professional cellist that has learned from the best and studied at the most competitive and recognized conservatories in the country. I'm not like other teachers that claim to be proficient on a dozen instruments with the ability of teaching all of them with equal skill. One of the of greatest challenges I've come across as a teacher time after time is fixing bad habits learned by poor instruction. If you are serious about learning the cello and want to avoid being discouraged by hitting that inevitable wall of difficulty because you weren't given the proper tools, then contact me and save yourself the headache. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you and achieving your goals as a cellist.
