    About Jennifer Y.

I am very passionate about teaching and hope to inspire a love for music in all my students! I believe that with hard work and a supportive teacher, a person can achieve anything. I impart to my students the knowledge I received from one of the nation's most prestigious music conservatories, and I offer training from methods in which I am certified to teach, all in a nurturing and friendly environment. I am certified in the Sassmannshaus Method (Early Start on the Violin) and was trained in the Suzuki Method. I have also studied pedagogy under Professor Kurt Sassmannshaus at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. I previously taught private lessons, chamber music, and masterclasses at the Virginia Beach School of the Arts, the Hampton Roads Performing Arts Academy (VA), and the Seven Hills School in Cincinnati. Aside from teaching, I am a professional violinist. Currently, I am the acting Assistant Concertmaster with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra and am also a member of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra. Prior to moving to Washington State, I previously performed with the Fayetteville Symphony, Tar River Philharmonic, Knoxville Symphony, Richmond (IN) Symphony, Symphony of the Mountains (TN), and the Oak Ridge Symphony. I have also attended many of the nation's premier music festivals, including the Castleton Festival, Texas Music Festival, Round Top Festival Institute, and the Brevard Music Center. I earned BM and MM degrees in violin performance from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), where I graduated Summa Cum Laude. My primary teachers were Dr. Piotr Milewski and Gabriel Pegis. Albert Einsten said, "I know that the most joy in my life has come to me from my violin." My joy comes from enabling students to experience this. Please join me for lessons! *** Lesson Details *** I am very upbeat and motivational in lessons. I care about helping my students succeed and achieve their goals. I'm honest but never harsh, and I challenge my students in order to help them flourish as talented musicians. I use a combination of the Sassmannshaus Method and the Suzuki Method. Both will teach the student the fundamentals of violin playing, how to read music, and famous pieces from the violin repertoire. Students who use this combination have gone on to become very advanced players, and someday, this could be you! Let me help you reach your highest potential! *** Studio Equipment *** In home: private, designated studio with music stand, metronome, and additional accessories, music, and equipment for student; seating for parents. I require that students rent or purchase their own instrument and necessary accessories (shoulder rest, rosin, strings, etc.) *** Specialties *** I was trained for 11 years in the Suzuki method, and I am a certified teacher of the Sassmannshaus Tradition violin method (Early Start on the Violin). I am classically trained and am most experienced teaching in that style, but I also enjoy fiddle and folk music and could teach in those styles as well.
