Jay recently graduated from Rice University's Shepherd School of Music where he received his Master's degree under the study of Norman Fischer. Prior to his studies at Rice, he attended Vanderbilt University and the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles. He has attended various summer programs including the Henry Mancini Institute, Colorado College Music Festival and the Tanglewood Music Center. Jay has been privileged to perform under some of the world's leading conductors, including James Levine, Bernard Haitink, André Previn, Sir Andrew Davis, Raphael Frühbeck de Bergos, Oliver Knussen, Herbert Bloomstedt and John Williams. He has also played in master classes for several esteemed artists, such as Yo-Yo Ma, Ronald Leonard, Richard Aaron, Joseph Silverstein, Lynn Harrell and members of the Juilliard, Cleveland, Orion, Turtle Island and Emerson String Quartets. Outside of the classical music scene, he enjoys performing and recording with singers and songwriters, and has played with popular artists such as Brian McKnight, Quincy Jones, Bobby McFerrin, Ricky Skaggs and Josh Groban. *** Lesson Details *** I like to teach in a relaxed atmosphere, making beginners feel like they can have fun while learning the cello. I cater to each individual student's needs, and set out goals based on each individual's motivation and drive. I teach out of the Suzuki method, but also like to teach songs at the student's request. I focus on relaxation and creating a nice sound out of the instrument. With practice, I believe any student can achieve their goals. *** Travel Equipment *** I can provide a music stand and chair while teaching from my home. If I travel to student's homes I expect them to provide a music stand. *** Specialties *** I teach out of the Suzuki method books. I specialize in classical training and orchestral training.
