I try to have all students learn to improvise at the piano, even if only as a supplement to their classical studies.
Learning to read music is very important, as well as ear training and learning music by ear.

Regardless of your musical tastes, I can help you achieve your goals on the piano, whether it is just to start out learning the basics or prepare for an important audition or recital.

Piano lessons for beginners will include learning to read music, basic piano technique, learning to play with expression and dynamics, musical ... interpretation, and exploring sonic possibilities of the piano through improvisation...

For more advanced students, depending on the style(s) of music they are interested in, lessons can include sight-reading, learning new repertoire, improvisation, ear training, music theory, composition, etc.

I don't use any one method for my students because each student has a unique background and set of interests; therefore, I tailor my lessons to each individual student.

That said, my approach is structured and disciplined, yet I'm also laid back and patient. But make no mistake, you will learn a lot and improve your piano skills while studying with me!

Jason Y. is an accomplished pianist, composer, and piano teacher residing in New York City. A classically-trained jazz pianist and composer, Jason graduated with honors from New England Conservatory of Music and Phi Beta Kappa/Summa Cum Laude from Tufts University, as a student in the schools' 5-year double degree program. At New England Conservatory he studied with legendary pianists Danilo Perez, Fred Hersch, and Ran Blake, among others. He is well versed in jazz, classical, popular, and ... several world music idioms.
