I am happy to be teaching with TakeLessons, and can teach you piano, and how to be creative with music - songwriting and composition.
Born in France, raised in Sacramento, I took to music at age five and studied piano formally for twenty years.
I've lived in Europe and the U.S. teaching and playing music.
I am trained pianist and composer, and have spent years teaching, and can teach you or your child a systematic, intuitive method for learning piano. Learning your instrument should be encouraging, exciting and about the creativity in music!
In San Francisco, I had a studio of fifteen students with ages ranging from 5 to 70 years old while I earned my Masters of Music, and have moved to LA for work and one year of post graduate work at USC.
I can teach you how to play songs, read music, learn the basics behind music theory and much more.
We can also tailor the lesson to your interests - from classical, to more modern, pop-oriented music.
I spent four years writing, producing and licensing music in New York City, and have written modern and classical music on piano and for various ensembles. My work can be heard on HBO, Showtime and in various films.

I always encourage improvisation and composition.

*** Specialties ***
Piano: James teaches basic and intermediate piano via the Faber Method. A highly intuitive and empowering modern way to learn the piano - tailored for children, accelerated children, and adults. I specialize in encouragement, motivation, and giving you a strong foundation at your instrument. I've played everything from classical to rock on the piano.
James can teach music theory - Harmony, Counterpoint, and basics. He can prepare you or your child for the ABRSM exams, and enjoys teaching music theory by way of ABRSM books and his own material, culled from years of study. Theory is most useful for someone who is learning an instrument, and a great way to encourage creativity.

I am enjoying my lessons with James. He is disciplined and has understood that I need to be learning to play as properly as I can. Progress is limited because of my limited time and not his teaching! I would recommend James to any adult with a serious and deep interest in music and in moving from being just a listener to someone who understands how music is constructed.

James C, phenomenal instructor. Enough said.
James is an outstanding piano teacher. His zeal for all things music is absolutely catching. At the age of 24 I came to James with merely the musical knowledge equivalent of a 6-year-old and a passion to learn. Within weeks he had me reading music and understanding basic theory. The best part about having James as a teacher? He took the time to find out what I was interested in learning, and built my lessons from there. If I only had the time to learn accordion...
