    About Jess M.

    Dr. Jess M. is a dedicated and gifted teacher who has enthusiastically worked with a vast array of students- from young beginning singers to celebrity clients performing in music theatre, opera, and other varied areas of contemporary and classical commercial music. Maintaining a busy teaching studio in New York City and Indianapolis, his students have appeared in the Broadway and National companies of many shows including, Annie, A Chorus Line, Chicago, Oklahoma, On The Town, Gypsy, Thoroughly Modern Millie, White Christmas, and on major recording labels including Sony, RCA, Atlantic, and Time Life. Dr. M. currently serves as Associate Professor of Voice at Indiana Wesleyan University and on the faculty of the Summer Opera Institute at the University of Central Florida. He has previously served as voice teacher and director of the undergraduate opera and music theatre workshop at The State University of New York, and on the voice faculty of the Rollins College Summer Music Academy in Florida, and Music Theatre Bavaria in Germany for musical theatre and classical singers. As a guest lecturer and clinician, he has presented workshops on vocal technique and repertoire for universities and churches throughout the country. He holds the Doctorate of Musical Arts from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, The Master of Music Degree from the Manhattan School of Music, and the Bachelor of Music Degree from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Lauded by the New York Times for his "extraordinary blend of colorful voice and powerful stage presence," tenor Jess M. has appeared with The New York City Opera, The American Symphony Orchestra, The American Composers Symphony, The Utah Festival Opera, The Ohio Light Opera, The Cincinnati Opera, the highly prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival of Scotland and many more. As an avid performer of the concert stage, Dr. Jess has been a featured soloist with the Verbier Music Festival of Switzerland, The Bard Music Festival, Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, The Israel Philharmonic, The Voices of Ascension, and in churches and performance spaces across New York City, among them Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, The Riverside Church, Marble Collegiate, and Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

    Associate Professor of Music- Voice Performance

    • Director of Opera Workshop and Musical Theatre Seminars (Fall 2012-present). Responsibilities include overseeing lectures and discussions on an array of topics including: the techniques and methodologies of stagecraft and characterization, the business of music, and other supplemental sources geared to support audition and career success. Furthermore, I oversee opera and musical theatre scenes programs with one main stage production annually where students are able to exercise the integration of music and drama all while developing a greater appreciation for various styles of opera and music theatre. Shows produced under my direction thus far include: Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Flaherty and Ahrens’ Once on This Island, Copland’s The Tender Land, and Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s South Pacific. • Voice Faculty Teacher to undergraduate applied and performance music majors. Responsibilities include preparing students for juries, performances, and auditions. Weekly studio class is held weekly. • Instructor for Song Literature Seminar (300 level). Responsibilities include overseeing lectures, discussions, and performance/ presentation projects that acquaint upper class voice majors with the works of significant song composers and performance practices surrounding them. (Spring 2013-present) • Instructor for courses in music appreciation and the humanities (Fall 2012) • Marketing: collaborating regularly with the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Vice President for Marketing in the areas of cultural intelligence and the recruitment of diverse faculty and students (faculty search committees, faculty workshops, design and content of marketing materials) • Task Forces Assignments and Foci: - Curriculum Mapping - Divisional Organization and Planning - Master Class Series and the recruitment of high-quality guest artists for Classical and Contemporary Commercial Music - Faculty Liaison for Study Abroad Programs (Music Theatre Bavaria, Opera Maya and others) - The Creation of new courses in Song Literature and Music Theatre for Voice and Theatre Majors - The revising of course content and assessments in Opera Workshop, and Applied Voice Lessons for the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Music in Performance - Developing of a new degree in Musical Theater • Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: academic advising, college and university-wide committees, marketing, student recruitment and retention initiatives, the mentoring of honors college research projects.
