I do expect a lot from my students and hope that my love for music will inspire my students to become passionate about music, too. I like to cater my curriculum to the student's specific goals, but still feel that everyone (including me!) needs to work on certain core curricula: 1. Technique building - this is important because good technique is the foundation of effortless mastery of one's instrument; 2. Repertoire - this is crucial in order to both keep a musician's interest vibrant, as well as to grow musically; 3. Sight-Reading - although some great musicians couldn't read music, being able to read music opens up endless possibilities and opportunities to grow. Imagine what it would be like if you couldn't read English!; and 4. Ear-Training - this is often overlooked by teachers but I find to be incredibly crucial. If you never develop your ear as a musician, you can only learn what people teach you and your growth will be stunted. However, if you develop your ear, you can learn about music wherever you go and whenever you please. I recall a time I once heard a door squeaking, and I thought "that sounds interesting," so I transcribed the sound and put it into one of my songs! I could never have done that if I hadn't worked on my ear. *** Travel Equipment *** I will have my instrument (except for drums - I will only bring sticks). They need their own instrument. They should also have their own books, but I have books and can photocopy pages if necessary. *** Specialties *** Jazz, blues, rock, latin jazz, reggae

Ian is GREAT to work with. Always a fine drummer, and then I realized this guy tears up the vibes (vibraphone) too. Great musician, great communicator. Can't miss :-)

Ian is an awesome teacher! He is so understanding and sensitive to what you need as a student, aiming to meet you where you're at. Also, his knowledge of theory is exceptional, particularly in the area of jazz. I've found him to be well-grounded in his musicianship and feel confident in seeking him for instruction and guidance.

Ian was my combo instructor for 3 semesters at SDSU. If there is one thing I can say about him is that he knows his stuff. I was blown away by the experience and knowledge that he possesses, especially given his age. He knows more about music and how to teach than most instructors I've had. I would recommend him as a teacher in any musical circumstance.
