Hugh studied music at Michigan State University and later at Wayne State University where he earned a bachelors degree in Jazz studies and Contemporary Media. He has ten years experience as a Middle School Band Director. Hugh has been giving private lessons to students of all ages for many years. "I've always been a teacher. I love showing others how they can express themselves through music. " *** Lesson Details *** Hugh is laid back and likes to have fun during music lessons. He believes that students learn better in a relaxed environment. He has a few favorite beginner books that he likes to use but is open to the students suggestions, too. Hugh knows from years of experience that starting with familiar music is a great way to learn quickly. Students are motivated to learn songs that they know and love. Most students know songs from the "American Song Book!" This is often a "jumping-off" point at one of Hugh's lessons. A student can learn ANY musical skill by studying a familiar song. Expect to be performing for friends and family very quickly. Hugh believes that, just like professional musicians, students are more motivated when they have a performance to look forward to. "It's human nature to want to work harder when you know others will be listening!"
