Specialties

I'm fluent in music theory ranging from Renaissance counterpoint to modern atonality and microtonality, which I use to bolster my students' abilities. For guitar, I focus on jazz and classical, because each one complements the other very well. I also teach rock and metal guitar styles. I teach at my recording studio, so I can show the student modern recording techniques as well.

Lesson Details

Gregg is a laid back instructor, but emphasizes the need to learn the instrument, not just a song. Lessons include learning music theory, history, technique, and repertoire based on the students' needs and desires. Diversity is key; classicists will learn how to analyze jazz standards with jazz cats will study 17th century counterpoint. Lessons with Gregg are a lesson on musical arts and philosophy, not just a session to learn to play your favorite song. About

Gregg has been involved in music for almost his entire life. He began with the saxophone in middle school, where he took lessons and played in the school band, orchestra, and jazz band. He was interested in many other instruments at the time; piano and clarinet lessons shortly followed, but he did not develop his skills on guitar until much later. In seventh and eighth grade, Gregg was accepted into the Region II Intermediate Band, an intercollegiate ensemble for middle school students, ... where he performed tenor saxophone both years.

In high school, Gregg participated in the freshman Concert Band (tenor sax), Symphonic Band (tenor sax sophomore year, bassoon senior year), Wind Ensemble (tenor sax junior and senior years), and the Marching Band (tenor sax freshman and junior years, baritone sax sophomore year). He also took the music theory courses offered at the time, with prefect grades in both of them.

While at Muhlenberg College (where he completed his B.A. degree), Gregg participated in the Wind Ensemble (bassoon), Orchestra (bassoon), Collegium Musicum (alto recorder, tenor viola da gamba), Jazz Improvisation Ensemble (tenor saxophone, guitar), and the Jazz Ensemble (baritone and alto saxophone, guitar, bassoon). He was also the first bassoonist in the Lehigh Valley Intercollegiate Wind Ensemble, which consisted of students from Muhlenberg and Moravian Colleges, and Lehigh and Kutztown Universities.

Gregg studied applied music in classical guitar (semesters 1-5), viola da gamba (2-5), jazz guitar (4-8), piano (5-8), bassoon (5-8), and composition & orchestration (with Douglas Ovens 7-8). He was also president of the 'Berg Organization of Music (BOOM), whose goal is to integrate music lovers all over campus by planning trips, talent showcases, and simply having musical discussions at the meetings.

He began teaching both privately and at Viva Music Studios during his senior year at Muhlenberg. He was also a tutor for music theory and recipient of a music award due to his commitment to all these ensembles and high grades in all the music classes. He began teaching at Spotlight Music in June of 2005.

At Montclair State University (where he was inducted into the Alpha Epsilon Lambda honor society) he studied composition with Dean Drummond for one year and Robert Aldridge for another. He also had two semesters of private guitar instruction. He participate din the Harry Partch Ensemble (where he played zoomoozophone, harmonic canon, adapted guitars I & II, diamond marimba, and cloud chamber bowls). This ensemble plays microtonal music, mostly written by Harry Partch, but also has performed a piece written by Gregg, among other contemporary composers.

Currently, Gregg is actively pursuing freelance production and composition projects for his studio, where he engineers and produces music for clients ranging from opera singers, to modern rock bands, to independent films and theater productions. His studio has released a number of commercially available records, including Gregg's original bands.

He is also an active student and plans to pursue a doctoral degree in the near future.
