Specialties

As my degree is in Commercial Voice, my specialty would be teaching voice students in the genres of pop, rock, country, jazz, R&B, etc. However, part of my degree was two years of classical training, and I feel more than qualified to teach classical students up to an intermediate level. I also have 15 years of piano experience and am able to teach beginners up to an intermediate level in this instrument as well.

Lesson Details

My philosophy in lessons is this: I want to teach you what you want to learn. Every student is at a different place in his or her life, learns in completely different ways, and has unique goals and reasons for wanting to take lessons. As a student in my studio you will receive lesson plans and methods of teaching that are tailored specifically to you as I get to know you as a musician and as a person. The beautiful aspect of my experience is how varied it is: my degree qualifies me to teach ... classical and commercial voice ("commercial" referring to the genres of pop, rock, country, jazz, R&B, blues, etc.), and my experience even reaches into the musical theater arena! So whatever niche you or your child are looking to explore, I can help.

It is my goal in lessons to create an atmosphere of encouragement and comfort where students aren’t afraid to be vulnerable and make mistakes. (After all, we learn more from our mistakes than our successes, and this is just as true in music as anywhere else in life.) I realize that a successful student/teacher relationship is built on trust, and I take that very seriously. I also encourage an open relationship with the parents of the children I teach, and invite them to be as much a part of our lessons and what their children are learning as they desire!

As a teacher, I will always make my expectations known, and clearly communicate the strengths of each lesson alongside of what I want you or your child to work on for the next time we meet. Our time together will provide you with a greater knowledge of your instrument (whether it be voice or piano), and tools and techniques that, when put into practice, will navigate you toward success in music. We will work hard. And we will have fun. SO much fun. :)

My two greatest passions in life are music and people. This shines in everything that I do, inside and outside of the creative realm, and makes me an excellent candidate to teach students of all ages. I have a personality and a heart that thrive off of working with others and helping them reach their fullest potential. If I am given the precious opportunity of teaching you or your child, I will go out of my way to help you in any way possible. Along with a teacher, you will gain a friend - ... someone who sincerely cares about you as a student and as a person. I am loving, trustworthy, extremely outgoing, responsible, professional, and thoroughly knowledgeable in my skill set.

As for my education and experience, my life has revolved around music since the age of five when I went to my very first piano lesson. I took privately for twelve years, playing for several churches and bands along the way. (This left me proficient in classical piano as well as chord charts and lead sheets.) Meanwhile, I was also developing my talents as a singer. I shined as a vocalist throughout middle and high school and always knew that music was what I wanted to pursue after graduating. I was the only sophomore to ever make it into the competitive show choir at my high school, and I was the youngest contestant to ever win the big talent competition in my hometown. Musical theater was another of my creative interests; I was chosen to play Cinderella in "Cinderella" in middle school, and starred in five additional musicals by the time I graduated high school. (I mention this because, while I do not offer acting lessons exclusively, if musical theater is something you or your child are interested in I would love to help with the dramatic side of things as well as the vocal side!)

I was accepted into Belmont University’s School of Music in November of 2008 and started as a Commercial Voice major there in the spring of 2009. My degree coursework included eight semesters of private voice lessons (both classical and commercial), four semesters of piano lessons, five semesters as a soloist and arranger for Belmont’s female a cappella ensemble, Vocal Style courses in both jazz and pop/rock, six semesters of music theory, and four semesters of ear training. I graduated in December of 2011 with a Bachelor of Music and a final GPA of a 3.5/4.0. Alongside of my academic work, I spent my time at Belmont songwriting and singing background vocals for many local artists.

I would also like to mention that I have a particular gift for working with children, and have been doing so in full and part time capacities for over eight years. I have developed a skill for communicating with children that makes it incredibly enjoyable to teach them, and I have found great success in this area. I absolutely adore children, and am completely confident and comfortable providing lessons to even the youngest age offered through Take Lessons.

In summary, I am a creative leader and teacher with exceptional interpersonal skills, outstanding intellectual aptitude and experience, and a reliable work ethic. I have mastered the balance between fun and hard work, and my students will leave lessons excited about our time together and what they’re learning. Nothing would bring me greater joy than the privilege of working with you or your child and helping to fine-tune your talents and love of music.
