    About Garry M.

About Me: I teach all ages 8-80 years old. Working with Kids: For parents, I have been SET-trained (Safe Environment Training) by my Church, and I have passed an extensive background check with the Highlands Ranch Community Association (HRCA). I have been playing guitar since I was in the Navy over 40 years ago. I am a musician, singer-songwriter, poet, philosopher, actor, and teacher. I currently teach guitar at the Highlands Ranch Community Association (HRCA). I previously taught guitar for Foothills Fine Arts Academy. Additionally, I occasionally perform at local restaurants (guitar and sing). Goals: All of my teaching will center around not only learning the basics of playing the guitar, but also to help build self-confidence in my students. Teaching my students how to sing and play at the same time will also be a priority. Most musicians today either play or sing, not both. By learning this ability early in the student's training, they will become more confident, and ultimately become a more valued member of a music group. Most teachers start music lessons with learning to read notes, and endless scales. This tends to be very tedious, and burns out students early on in their studies. My technique for teaching guitar is what is known as the "Cowboy" chords method. This technique teaches how to “talk” music with chords, before learning to read and write (just like a baby learns). Using this method all students will be playing songs almost immediately. What to Expect: In the beginning, seeing what you're going to learn may seem overwhelming! It's not if you take it one step at a time. Everything will seem awkward and confusing at first. The guitar will feel uncomfortable and your fingertips will feel some pain and tenderness. This is common and will change with persistent practice. Eventually, your fingertips won't hurt anymore, and your guitar will become as comfortable as an old friend. With practice playing gets easier and easier. I always recommend practicing with a friend. Before you know it, playing the guitar will become second nature ... you'll be able to play with the best of them! Be persistent and never give up!
