Erin S. - Cello I studied cello performance at Carnegie-Mellon University with Anne Martinadale-Williams, principal cellist of the Pittsburgh Symphony. I also studied with members of the Boston Symphony, the Chautauqua Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra and the Beaux Arts Trio. I have performed extensively around the country and in Europe, including New York City’s Carnegie Hall. In the Pittsburgh area, I have played with the Westmoreland Symphony, Altoona Symphony and spent several years as principal cellist of the Pittsburgh Philharmonic. I teach privately in the Pittsburgh area, where I have maintained a teaching studio for over 18 years. In addition to my classical career, I have extensive experience in rock, jazz, country and bluegrass and have been featured in over 50 recordings on cello, electric cello, upright bass and bass guitar. Benefit from my decades of experience and there will be no limit to what you can learn! *** Lesson Details *** Most of my lessons follow a standard curriculum of etudes, pieces, bowing and position exercises, and duets. I allow my students a certain amount of freedom in choosing their "fun" pieces and often will transcribe popular songs that my students request. Anything from "Game of Thrones" to Macklemore to video game theme songs. I encourage all my students to learn music theory basics and improvisation skills, but I understand that improv is not for everyone and I don't push those who have no wish to learn it. I've had many adult students and understand how to teach those with limited practice time. *** Studio Equipment *** I have two cellos and a piano, music stand, and lesson books, but require students to bring their own cellos and books. *** Specialties *** I specialize in teaching classical cello techniques and applying them to a wide range of musical genres. I also have had great success in teaching my students how to improvise.
