Hello! My name is Emily Z. and I am currently the Choral Director at a public high school in Montgomery County, MD. I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Music Education/Voice from West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 2012. I have been teaching private lessons to young musicians for over four years. My concentration is in Classical Voice , but I also enjoy teaching a rigorous and fun Piano curriculum at my high school and also enjoy teaching Guitar. I also have background in Musical Theater, Acting and Audition Prep and I am a creative and patient facilitator of Classical Music Reading/Writing, Music Theory, Sight Reading and Ear Training - I feel that these skills are important for all my students to learn! Below are my lessons offered with details: Classical Voice in Your Home or Mine: It is preferable that families have a piano in their home if they would like in home lessons. In this series of lessons, I will teach your young musician basic breathing and vocal techniques to support their singing voice wherever they choose to take it! Vocal health and anatomy is included because with the right foundation, your student will have a long and healthy singing career. Depending on the students age, different aspects of classical training can be taught such as; singing in a different language (Italian, French, Spanish, German), sight-reading (the ability to sing a piece without having heard it before), preparing a song in a favorite style (Musical Theater, Classical, Pop) and many other options that can tailor vocal training to your student's interests. We can also spend time learning or preparing the music for your student's choir class, church choir, All-County or All-State concerts, or any audition they may have coming up. All of my lesson series end with a recital of prepared pieces for family and friends. Classical and Popular Piano in Your Home or Mine It is necessary that students have their own piano or keyboard to practice on when they are at home! In this series of the lessons, which is modeled after my own curriculum in the classroom, I will teach your student the basic of music reading. They will be able to begin practicing on the keyboard on day one. My curriculum is easily sequenced and filled with fun milestone projects so students can master and apply the large vocabulary of skills they acquire in relevant ways. Some projects include; recitals, writing music, accompanying a singer, duets and learning to play your favorite popular song, among many more. All of my lesson series end with a recital of prepared pieces for family and friends. Classical and Popular Guitar (Your Home or Mine): It is necessary that students have their own guitar - acoustic, classical or electric. In this series of lessons, I will take your young musician from the basic of guitar anatomy to reading music to applying what they've learned to play their favorite songs. It is always necessary to have a good foundation of classical music reading (knowing the notes of the guitar and what they look like on paper) in order to progress to chords and strum patterns. The goal of this well-rounded course is to have your student be able to read and play guitar in the Standard Notation of music (on a staff) AND be able to read Lead Sheet Notation (just chords) to play their favorite popular repertoire and play with others in a band setting. Music Reading/Music Theory/Ear Training/Sight Reading (Your Home or Mine): No materials necessary. Keyboard would be helpful for you to have. This course is ideal for older students who are seriously considering applying to a college or university music program. Most programs require an entrance exam that tests how well you hear music, write music and read music. My course will identify what your student's strengths and weaknesses are and prepare them to be a well-rounded musician with a wide musical vocabulary and the ability to hear and identify important musical moments. These lessons are ideal for vocalists and instrumentalists and anyone who wants to begin their music education. Acting on Stage (Your Home or Mine) With a long background in performance and directing, I can teach your aspiring actor or actress the basics of dramaturgy, speech, auditioning and performance on stage. Whether your student is preparing for a role in the school play, a commercial audition, or would just like to become a more confident speaker, these lessons will provide a well-rounded knowledge of the stage, voice, and movement in fun and engaging ways! All lesson series will culminate with a performance for family and friends. Students are encouraged to sign up and bring a friend or two for even more fun acting possibilities! *** Specialties *** Trained in Orff, Kodaly and Dalcroze methods of Music Education. I am creative and patient and keep students interested with engaging and relevant activities. I have earned a Certificate of Completion in Teaching Music to Special Learners and have a variety of accommodating approaches to teaching music to students with special needs. Thank you for reading! I hope to hear from you soon and get your student started on the wholesome, enriching and fun path of a musical education! Emily Z.
