Specialties

I enjoy tailoring my lessons to my students specific needs in conjunction with laying a solid foundation in music theory. If possible, I teach all of my students to read written notation. I am a classically trained mezzo soprano. I also specialize in incorporating creative composition and improvisation.

Lesson Details

I focus on creating a fun, entertaining, and creative lesson where students are taught the specific skills they are interested in while building a solid foundation in music theory. I tailor each students lessons to reflect the individuals goals for musicianship and what kind of music they would like to play. In addition to specific learning exercises, the students will choose the songs that they would like to learn. I believe that the passion and the musical material that has inspired a ... student to take lessons must be an intricate part in the music that they are playing. Along with this inclusion, I utilize a variety of musical styles to teach the language of music through aural perception and written notation.
The greatest part is: each student is taught what they want and need to learn as an aspiring musician, as agreed upon by parent, student, and teacher.
I am a fun and creative instructor who likes to explore composition as a learning tool. I encourage my students to write their own music.
I expect my students to practice and spend time with their instrument so that each lesson can build on the previous lesson.
I am patient with my students and will work with any special needs. Teaching is a great joy for me and I really love my work.
Having a successful lesson means learning new information and having a good time doing it!
The curriculum I use for piano is the Faber and Faber Piano Adventure series, supplemented with many worksheets and additional performance pieces.
I like to use the Alfred guitar books as a base, when working with notation and written theory. I also use fret board worksheets, tablature, and all available guitar resources.
For vocal lessons I use the classic 26 Italian songs and Arias for high and low voice, age appropriate Broadway songs, several tried and true vocalises, and innumerable performance pieces.
In three to six months you will be more competently exploring your instrument, reading music in what ever format you prefer, and practicing songs you want to learn! You will also be preparing for a music performance, if you are willing and ready to participate.

Composer and Vocalist, Ember L., received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music through the Prescott College Adult Degree Program in the spring of 2011. She has been writing and performing her own music since the age of ten.
She has written over 140 Art Songs for solo voice and guitar of piano and has recently composed, produced, and directed her first Folk Opera, "The Severed Kingdom". As a vocalist, Ember has studied classically with several professional opera singers and has been trained in ... how to specifically teach voice by one of the finest vocal instructors in the Tri-city area.
She has studied piano through Yavapai College and has been playing the guitar for sixteen years. She thoroughly enjoys teaching music to children of all ages and abilities. In her instruction she places special emphasis on the language of music and how it is communicated through the performer to the audience.
She also focuses on empowering her students to express and more deeply understand themselves and their environment through music. Her musical influences range from the Wagnerian Music Dramas to indigenous folk music, with a splash of rock in roll!
