Lesson Details

While hard work is the name of the game, I believe that humor and a comfortable atmosphere are key to good learning. It is not my goal to push my students to work hard, rather, it is my goal to create an environment where my students wish to drive themselves to their limits and beyond. I view myself not as an instructor, but more as a guide who knows the pathways of the voice and can help a student discover the paths that best lead them to their goal.

The most important aspect of my ... lessons is the emphasis on creating a well-rounded musician. In addition to vocal techniques, I also teach my students how to read music, sight-sing, and basic music theory. I also enjoy teaching music history as the opportunity presents itself, as I feel the life and times of the composer can often reveal important aspects of a musical work. I tailor lessons to meet the needs and skills of each individual, in order to provide a lesson that will be fun, new, and challenging. Hello stranger, and welcome! Allow me to tell you a bit about myself. My name is Davin, and I am a musician to the core. I have been singing practically since I could speak, and have performed in ensembles my entire life. Whether it was with my church, the Madison Youth Choirs, in high school, college, or professionally, I have sung as both a choral member and a soloist for over 16 years. By the time I was a sophomore in high school I knew I wanted to spend my life performing and teaching ... music, which led me to Luther College. There I graduated with a B.A. after studying vocal music and education in one of the most rigorous music programs in the nation.

I bring all of my substantial training and personal experience to my lessons. While I believe that hard work and dedication are the only path to making truly great music, I also believe that a lesson without fun and humor is a lesson not worth taking. I enjoy working with students of any caliber and age, and am wiling to teach virtually any style of music (as I myself enjoy singing in many different styles). Most importantly, I do not merely teach my students how to sing; I teach them how to make music, and how to care for their voice so they may continue to make music for the rest of their lives.
