Specialties

Grounded in vocal technique for healthy singing in any genre, I specialize in classical voice and have a special interest in art song and the sacred repertoire, especially that from before 1750.

Having graduated with a degree in composition, I am versed in classical music theory and also have an interest in minimalism and avant-garde techniques.

I teach voice and theory through the advanced level, and beginning and intermediate piano.

Lesson Details

**Important: I do not normally teach voice students younger than 14 years old, except in special circumstances. However, I am happy to teach piano or general music to students of any age.**

MY TEACHING GOALS

1. Open students up to the wealth of the Western classical music tradition, while integrating students' personal musical interests.
2. Build and reinforce knowledge of the basics of technique, gradually instilling self-awareness and self-sufficiency in every student.
3. Build and ... reinforce knowledge of the basics of music theory, ear training and sight-reading.
4. Guide students toward discovering their voice as an artist: discovering and becoming comfortable with honest self-expression and artistry in their music making.

PHILOSOPHY

Words are ideas, sounds, and designs on a page that represent and transmit thoughts, emotions, and stories. The same can be said of music, but the information being transmitted is much more abstract.

My stance is that the classical repertoire is very important to experience, especially if the student has little exposure to this vast, rich part of our musical history. Along with its benefits for building musicianship and basic technique, classical music provides a blank canvas for students—especially singers—to learn what their instrument is capable of. Without the external stylistic associations inherent to, and arguably necessary for, popular and theatrical genres, students are challenged to find other, new ways to “make it interesting.”

In short, I seek to help my students learn to grow past "imitating," and grow into "creating" music. While imitation is a necessary step in learning, creation is the beginning of art.
