An alumni of Sonoma State University, I earned both a Bachelors of Arts in Jazz Saxophone Studies, as well as a Bachelors of Arts in Environmental Studies. I have seven years experience studying classical piano, as well as thirteen years (and counting) experience playing saxophone. I teach lessons to students of all ages, and love to convey my passion for music to others! I believe in the importance of all aspects of musicianship, including theory, performance, technique, ear training, history, and listening practice. To be a great musician, one must learn from the greats, and studying them is absolutely crucial to artistic growth! While I hold a degree in Jazz Music, I am very interested in all genres of music, and am very proud of my giant vinyl record collection, which includes music from all over the world. In any given day, I'll listen to some Miles Davis, Dock Boggs, Parliament Funkadelic, Prince Buster, Andres Huesca, Beethoven, and the Grateful Dead! In addition to teaching privately, I currently perform with two bands professionally: The Mochilero All Stars, and The Full Strength Funk Band. You may check out Full Strength's upcoming gigs and performances here: www.fullstrengthfunkband.com Noted individuals I have performed with include Dr. Jason Robinson, Gilbert Castellanos, Joshua White, Ryder Davidson, Ian Tordella, Anthony Davis, Danny Weller, Rob Thorsen, Ellen Weller, The Amalgamated Ska, Full Strength Funk Band, Mochilero All Stars, Mitch Thomas, Kasey Knudsen, the King Soul Revue, and many others. *** Lesson Details *** Given that no two students are the same, my lessons incorporate a personalized approach, geared to the goals of each individual student! *** Specialties *** Jazz, Reggae, Ska, and Funk! I consider myself very well-versed on jazz music history, and believe that in order to play jazz music, one must learn from the jazz lineage! I make sure to give all my students listening assignments so that they may find themselves more acquainted with this wonderful American art form.

Our first lesson was a very good experience overall; my son said he enjoyed the lesson a lot. Colin connects well with students. Responsible and organized. Mixed in music theory with having fun.

Colin is a great instructor, and has always kept lessons fun and enjoyable! He teaches efficiently and is never afraid to throw in some funny analogies or anecdotes to keep it relaxing. His communication is fantastic, and he'll always talk to you about future conflicts. Colin helped me get into saxophone playing, and has been amazingly helpful throughout all of his lessons. He has helped me improve greatly on improvisation and technical skill, and overall has been a huge inspiration for my playing!

Colin is the best surf instructor I have ever had! He asked me to explain my goals and developed a teaching approach based on what I wanted to be able to do on the water. People who are very good at something are rarely also very good at teaching, but Colin is a welcome exception! I look forward to surfing with him this summer.
