Lesson Details

Whether you are interested in getting started for the first time on the violin, hoping to play a song from your digital library, or looking for a challenge, I know you will find that our time together is guided by your specific goals. I recognize that each student is an individual; that you have your own strengths and weaknesses, experiences, wants, and learning styles. That is why I go at a pace that suits you, offer music that interests you, and use techniques that are effective for you. ...

Below are a couple examples.

One of my former students was interested in learning to write music. In the first third of his lessons we would learn to play a simple piece like the Mozart Theme that has become known as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. In the second portion of his lessons we would break the theme down into pieces and look to see how the whole composition works together; a basic analysis. Lastly I would explain his assignment for that week which used some of the same techniques he had learned earlier in that lesson. At the end of six months this beginner student had written three themes independently with correct notation and that were pleasing to the ear.

Another student was interested in transferring her knowledge of the piano to the violin. I designed her lessons to highlight the similarities and differences between the two instruments. Since she was used to pressing down a key on the piano and having the right pitch come out, we spent time in each lesson playing games that developed her sense of higher and lower pitches on the violin. At the beginning of the next school year she decided she enjoyed playing a stringed instrument so much that she picked up the cello.

Just as with the aspiring composer and the multi-instrumentalist, my job is to understand your needs and wants, and then find a fun way to help you reach them on the violin.
