My guitar lessons are geared toward songwriting and accompaniment. I stress simplicity, expressiveness, and real-world performance skills.
Hello, I'm Chantilly! I'm a singer, songwriter, and music teacher from Brooklyn, NY.
I started off studying classical ear training, theory, and operatic voice. Eventually I moved on to Purchase College, where I earned my degree in Studio Composition, graduated with honors, and also won the Patricia Kerr Ross award for songwriting and performance. Since then, I've released two pop-folk albums, toured the northeast, began teaching voice and guitar lessons out of my home studio in Brooklyn, and haven't looked back!
Over the years, I've found that my goal is primarily to help students feel passion of life through music. Of course I go over technique chords, and theory (etc.), but I find that the best and most important part is the sense of accomplishment and achievement each lesson takes us towards.
I believe it's important to create a positive learning space, and provide a friendly, easygoing environment. I try my best to help everyone achieve whatever their goals may be! I am comfortable working with students of all ages, and particularly find beginners and children a joy.
I'm really very interested in helping you find your passion, and I'd love to hear more about yourself and your goals!
*** Lesson Details ***
The first lesson with me is usually a getting-to-know each other type of lesson. I asses your skills, and we talk about your preferences for types of things you want to learn. You might want to learn how to read music, or maybe you just want to play songs by your favorite artist. It's all good!
Next, we set a plan for you. My guitar style is geared towards songwriting and accompaniment, so we work on learning chords, rhythms, strumming patterns, and repertoire. I do like to incorporate some note and chart reading when possible, but it really depends on the student. Each piece and skill we learn will be gradually harder in difficulty, until we can get you playing like a pro :)
Voice lessons will always start with a warm up and breathing exercises. I specialize in, and enjoy helping my students find their own unique, beautiful voice. So as we work on technique, I'm also always coaching on zeroing in on finding that special place inside yourself.
And for songwriting, we work on one of your pieces every 1-3 weeks. I love to incorporate specific topics each week such as structure, good melody writing, and harmony, but that's up to you.
Thank you for taking the time to read about me, and I can't wait to hear from you!
*** Studio Equipment ***
In my studio, I have an extra guitar. For voice, I also have a recording program to record our lessons, and am able to send you an mp3 afterwards to practice along with.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my guitar, and expect students to have their own. For singing lessons, it would be best if they had a computer with a program like Garage Band to record, and practice to the lessons.
*** Specialties ***
I'm a singer-songwriter, so my style is more towards accompaniment-based teaching, as well as performance. My goal with many of my students is to get them up and performing songs like a pro!
