    About Cathy W.

Cathy W. is an experienced teacher, guitarist and vocalist who enjoys teaching everything from beginning to advanced guitar. She helps students find and play the music they are interested in. She has deep musical roots in traditional and modern folk, blues and jazz, plus a love for playing guitar & singing made richer through years of professional touring and performing. Whether lessons are basic or advanced, for adults or children, Cathy's priority is to help students play music they love as they improve their guitar playing and their musical skills.   *** Lesson Details *** GUITAR LESSONS FOR CHILDREN: I give young students easy pieces to play right away, using tablature so they can enjoy playing real music in their first lesson. I gradually build in knowledge of musical styles with different pieces working with musical skills and the basics of a music education - scales, chords, music notation and some ear training and theory - always keeping an ear out to be sure they are enjoying the music they play. I help students develop good practice habits, working to respect their personal music tastes while expanding their musical horizons and abilities. Children can start when they are big enough to hold a guitar on their lap. Most guitar or music stores in the area carry a few inexpensive guitars in small sizes. GUITAR LESSONS FOR ADULTS I work with adult students to go where they want to go. Lessons can combine elements of the basics - chords, strums, picking patterns - as well as building into more complex aspects, like bass runs, melody and harmony lines, arranging breaks, music theory or instrumentals written out in tablature or standard music notation. You can bring songs or pieces you want to learn or I can bring you new pieces and styles to help you widen your repertoire and expand your abilities with different kinds of music. *** Studio Equipment *** Lessons in a separate music room *** Travel Equipment *** I charge extra for travel time and prefer to teach in my own studio. For students I need to travel to, I bring paper materials, they need a music stand and an iPod or CD player for sampling materials. *** Specialties *** acoustic guitar - folk and acoustic styles - fingerpicking, strumming & flatpicking plus arranging & theory. I have deep musical roots in traditional and modern folk, blues and jazz, plus a love for playing guitar & singing. I am an experienced songwriter and am always happy to work with student on their own compositions. Guitar lessons with me can combine elements of the basics - chords, strums, picking patterns - as well as building into more complex aspects, like bass runs, melody and harmony lines, arranging breaks, music theory or instrumentals written out in tablature or standard music notation.
