Lesson Details

Caroline has high expectations, but is a very patient teacher. She will work with you in your learning style to help you achieve the best results. She breaks down aspects of playing your instrument and pieces into small, manageable steps, to allow you to progress with enthusiasm at your own pace.

In lessons you can expect that you will learn the technique required to learn to play your instrument, as well as gain a solid foundation in musical expression and performance practices of many ... different style periods. Both learning by ear and note reading are taught and used regularly, as both methods of learning have their benefits. Music theory, music history, and listening assignments are included in the lessons, as are recommendations for concerts to enhance the learning experience and your love of music!

Students can expect to be sent home with a clear idea of what they are supposed to practice, and how! Students and/or parents are encouraged to watch lessons and take notes, as parental involvement and encouragement aids the learning process.

Violin and viola students can choose between Suzuki and traditional methods for their main lesson system, and I will supplement with the other, so the student can learn both by ear and learn to read music, both valuable skills. After completion of these books, students most often play out of a combination of Flesch Scale System, Kreutzer etudes, orchestral excerpts, and solo pieces like sonatas and concertos, to prepare students to meet their goals if they wish to play solo, in and orchestra or chamber setting. Fiddle students rely heavily on recordings of their favorite players to learn both tunes and style at once. Cello students will use Essential Elements, and piano students will use the Alfred Method, both well-respected methods to learning the instruments. Theory students have many methods from which to choose, and we will pick based on your individual learning styles and goals. In addition to the standard repertoire, everyone has the option of studying pop, folk, jazz, or other styles as they wish – the real joy comes when you can play that song or piece you’ve always wanted!

About

Caroline is an experienced, enthusiastic, and patient teacher of many instruments and musical styles. She began the violin at age 9, and fiddle at age 10. She began teaching fiddle to adults at age 12, after joining the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers. Then, she took up cello at 15 and piano at 16. Caroline also began composing at age 16, and in 2009 got her Bachelor’s of Music in Composition from University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. She has played with fiddle, rock, and gospel groups, ... as well as orchestras, string chamber ensembles, and in solo recitals. She also loves playing new music, and to date has premiered several pieces written for her play. She also presented original research on Cape Breton fiddle music as part of her undergraduate work.

Caroline’s vast performing, composing and research experience gives her the tools to help students achieve their goals. Whatever it is you want to do with music, Caroline has probably done it – and will help you get there! She has been teaching music for over a decade, and looks forward to helping you along your own musical journey.

Today, Caroline is working on her Masters’ in Viola Performance at Denver University, where she is also earning her Suzuki certificate to teach violin in the Suzuki method.
