    About Carol Joy "CJ" E.

Welcome! I'm glad you're here and hope we'll have a chance to work together. I've been singing and teaching professionally for over 25 years, 22 of those in New York City and have had the privilege of making music with some amazing world-class musicians including: ~ Riccardo Muti/Philadelphia Orchestra/Carnegie Hall/NYC; ~ Kurt Masur/Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra/Avery Fisher Hall/NYC; and ~ Eugene Ormandy/ Philadelphia Orchestra/Academy of Music/Philadelphia, PA. My training and honors include: ~ Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ: Master of Music ~ Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies in Aldeburgh, England: French Song ~ Dr. Gloria Cooper/Long Island University: Jazz Vocal Style ~ Lisa Popeil/Los Angeles: Popular Vocal Style ~ Liederkrantz Competition, NYC: Semi-finalist ~ NATS Student Auditions/Advanced Division/NJ: First Place ~ Pennsylvania State University/State College, PA: B.A. *** Lesson Details *** What will happen? During our first lesson, after I hear you sing and get to know you a bit, I'll select a collection of songs for you to use (accompaniment CD included). Some of the song collections include: Classical Contest Solos, 36 Solos for Young Singers, Disney Solos for Kids, Kids Broadway Songbook, First Book of Broadway Solos, Jazz Standards, Teens' Musical Theatre or Singer's Musical Theater Anthology. Whether you're a beginner or advanced student, we'll always look at the basics first: things like posture, breathing, stretching, and tension-release. We'll also work on basic musicianship, diction, presentation and interpretation appropriate for your age and level. We'll use a voice lesson notebook created especially for your age/stage to help guide you through your lessons. I'll encourage you to perform in front of others, starting with our own Spring Recital, but also including periodic voice and master classes. No matter what your age, ability or interest, I can help you: a) have fun learning to sing better; b) prepare a solo for family, friends or a piano bar, c) prepare for a college or community choir audition, or d) simply learn to make more beautiful sounds and see where it leads. What are you waiting for?  *** Studio Equipment *** Designated Music Room: Piano, microphones, music stand, seating for parents in room as well as in larger waiting room , music collections for sale, diction charts, music reference books *** Travel Equipment *** Preferably, student should have a keyboard of some sort for warm-ups. I will provide CD player/amplifier with mic. *** Specialties *** I teach a healthy, free approach to singing based on a classic vocal technique of tall/aligned posture, low/released breath, suspended ribcage and relaxed jaw. That technique is applied (with necessary variation) to classical songs (arias, art and folk ) and non-classical songs (musical theater, cabaret/jazz standards, pop). We'll also cover basic musicianship and music reading. Specialties: > art songs, arias in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish for all age groups > teaching the voice as an instrument for all ages > vocal techniques for rock/pop singers > beginning to intermediate French horn for all ages
