Specialties

I instruct students on the importance of theory, scales, and technique work to improve their speed and agility. I also use Lesson books to keep them moving along and to teach them sight reading as they improve. I allow the students to pick songs of their choice for them to stay motivated to play. I understand that kids like to play more modern songs these days. It's important to keep them interested and working towards their goals. Lesson Details

In my lessons I use theory to teach the fundamentals of what music is and how it is written. I incorporate these ideas my adding technique exercises to show how to put in practice these written ideas. This process also strengthens the hand and creates more agility of the fingers.
In the beginning my students use flash cards, of which I test in speed, to be able to learn how read the notes in three months or less. The following years my students spend with me can then be dedicated to ... learning in depth the construction of music, while learning how to play more complex pieces, or even composing their own.
My lessons do involve practicing and homework. However, I am compassionate enough to understand the complex lives we all lead. All I ask is that you love to be a part of music and try your best.

About

My name is Carissa. I first began playing the piano when I was 8 years old. As a child, the arts inspired me in so many ways. I wanted to show people how to feel their own souls through the arts the way it made me feel as well. I remember being young listening to Chopin. When I learned how to play his music, I felt as if I were the one creating the passion that the composer felt as he poured his own heart and soul into sound for the people. I also found that in learning piano in such a ... detailed manner, I could pick up other instruments easily by myself too. I learned and taught a little beginning guitar in my college years as a result.
I studied piano with The California's Music Teachers Association straight through till I graduated high school and went to college. We had yearly exams, recitals, competitions and collaborations. I won several Bach contests and scored very high in all my yearly exams. I decided to go into teaching when I first finished my music lessons. I was teaching some of peers how to play guitar based off of what I learned in my years in piano. They became amazingly great at guitar and joined some good solid bands that toured the coast. I was so happy and enjoyed my time with them in music so much, that I knew teaching and inspiring people in the arts was for me.
My musical career has taken me to not only teaching music, but also collaborating with several musical artists throughout my travels and performing at popular venues. Traveling and playing music is an inspiration in itself. Being that it was truly an amazing experience, it is my aspiration to bring the same light to others hearts through music for my students.
